Hardcore opponents of gun control in the U.S. often respond to school shootings by proposing to arm teachers or add armed security guards to schools. But the inability of police to stop the gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, before he killed at least 19 children and two teachers Tuesday exposes the poor reasoning behind that proposal.
While all the details of the shooting are not yet clear, authorities’ accounts revealed that the gunman was confronted by multiple armed police officers — yet they were unable to stop him before he killed nearly two dozen people.
The gunman reportedly crashed his truck in a ditch near the campus before entering the school, and police officers arrived at the school after a report of that crash.
According to CBS News’ summary of Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Christopher Olivarez’s account, the shooter “stormed Robb Elementary School in the small city of Uvalde shortly after crashing his car in the area and immediately engaged in gunfire with state troopers on the scene. The gunman shot several police officers and then locked himself in a classroom.”

According to various reports, after local officers called for backup, a specialized tactical unit made it into the classroom a full hour after the gunman entered the school, and an agent of an elite law enforcement unit was involved in killing the gunman. (That agent was injured in the process.)
Given those details, I find it increasingly impossible to understand how one could believe that the solution to school shootings is arming teachers or having a security guard protecting every school. If a group of police officers couldn’t stop a shooter, then why would we expect an individual teacher or security guard to do better?

So to MSNBC police standing outside the school for 90 minutes is the exact same thing as a teacher in the classroom that is armed.
That tells you all you need to know.
Idiots and liars write such insanity.
Idiots and liars also agree with it.
Had the teacher been armed, s/he would at least have had a fighting chance...
Well the cops were. And they did nothing. What do you think teachers would have done?
Have you ever MET any teachers? First of all, 90% of them are female. And if you think they could immediately switch to “hunt, kill” mode, you are delusional.
Oh really. Please explain to me how this would happen, especially with a guy wearing full body armor. It amazes me that people in this forum actually think a teacher managing 30 kids at once could have instantly pivoted to drawing and taking this guy down with a head shot. The Rambo fantasies are amazing.
How about the shop class guy, or the Gym class guy, or the principal.
The shooter was a “person of color”, making the police hold their hands so that they’re not racist.

Plus the fines for destroying school property by breaking down the door would have been a career ender.
The two teachers who were murdered were unarmed. Had one or both been armed, lives MIGHT have been saved.
Is this author really that stupid, or does he think everyone else is.
When one of mine was in first days of first grade I had to go through all kinds of security gates and measures to get her out to see a dentist.
Next day I went to carline end of day. I was #3 or so in line One hour I waited. Went up to get her and they didn’t know where she was. They said ‘eh maybe she’s in the classroom” non chalant not the same security they had to keep me out the day before
I pulle cthe car around and there’s the kid in the parking lot. 5 years old.
Out of that school. Their safety measures were so senseless so illogical so non effective I kept her out for years then I taught at the school the kids attended.
It was Texas.
Yo, Muslim article author, why don’t you see how far you’d get attacking a school in Israel where those teachers are armed and let’s see if you live long enough to maintain your soiboi smug attitude?
The Texas shooting shows the futility of arming teachers
%\
Tell that to Israel.
They don’t have their heads so far up the commies nethers to even think such an asinine thing.
Just had a presser: Shooter was NOT confronted by anyone in the school. No armed security officer in the school, they don’t know why. Took police 12 minutes to respond.
Because they have never heard of a thing called a “battering ram” or “multiple men” being used to bring down a door.
Also, what was wrong with using the windows?
The cops weren't standing around the “locked room.” They were standing around cars and chatting, shooting the breeze.
It was my understanding that he was only in one classroom, not "rampaging" through the school.
I’ve been on campus during a mass shooting and I can tell you that I really wanted a gun.
“Have you ever MET any teachers? First of all, 90% of them are female
How about the shop class guy, or the Gym class guy, or the principal.”
Still 90% female.
so much for diversity
Yeah, I have no Rambo fantasies about the police, either. 150 armed, armor-protected police can't do a dang thing but stand around outside, on a nice day.
