Five years ago, you'd encounter a few homeless people sleeping in the street, and get hit on by a beggar or two, how is it now? Far, far worse. Whatever else you do, do NOT walk down Jackson or Van Buren. Both reek of urine and feces.
I have to go downtown once a week for work. It's a ghost town during the week. Less than 1/10th of the people there used to be, there are many restaurants, shops, etc.. that are permanently closed.
With the warmer weather, the hoodrats and gangbangers are downtown and especially on Michigan Ave. and the Mag Mile because that's where the money is. They don't hesitate to do smash and grabs, rob people, carjack. Perhaps you heard about the shooting at the McDonalds near Rush St. that you asked about?
Best advice: DON'T GO. Don't give that fascist lesbian licking mayor of Shitcago a single dime of your hard earned money.
