I grew up on Chicago's Southside, a graduate of Morgan Park HS.
I'm returning to downtown Chicago after almost 5 years. What will I see? How safe is it? Can I walk safely down Rush street and Michigan Avenue at night, or do I take an Uber just to go three blocks.
Five years ago, you'd encounter a few homeless people sleeping in the street, and get hit on by a beggar or two, how is it now?
What kind of security downtown. Any festivals in Grant Park this weekend?
Thank you for the help.
“Can I walk safely down Rush street and Michigan Avenue at night…”
No.

So, if I have dinner, let’s say at Gibson’s or LeColonial, I can’t walk back to my place three blocks away? Are you serious?
I’ll tell you something else. I’m carrying no wallet, just some cash, about $200 and my ID, phone and one credit card.
If I get mugged, I’m giving them the money and my phone and password. No questions asked.
I want to hit Kingston Mines, a blues bar. It’s permanently closed. Any other blues bars open in down, like Buddy Guy’s?
Far, far worse. Whatever else you do, do NOT walk down Jackson or Van Buren. Both reek of urine and feces.
I have to go downtown once a week for work. It's a ghost town during the week. Less than 1/10th of the people there used to be, there are many restaurants, shops, etc.. that are permanently closed.
With the warmer weather, the hoodrats and gangbangers are downtown and especially on Michigan Ave. and the Mag Mile because that's where the money is. They don't hesitate to do smash and grabs, rob people, carjack. Perhaps you heard about the shooting at the McDonalds near Rush St. that you asked about?
Best advice: DON'T GO. Don't give that fascist lesbian licking mayor of Shitcago a single dime of your hard earned money.
But take your Uzi just in case.
No, it's not. It's also my favorite blues club, haven't been there since before the pandemic.
They're open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays according to their May Events calendar.
Again, I'd stay the hell out of Chicago -- but that's just me and my hatred for getting mugged, carjacked, beat-up, killed -- and that horrible lesbian mayor the idiots there voted into office. She's made everything exponentially worse.
Sounds like I’ll have to give everyone an update of what I see.

Posthumously?
That would be great news. Maybe I was reading something from last year.
Looks like they set the “walking man” on fire, a well known homeless guy who walks the streets of downtown Chicago.
Is there anything of interest for Vietnamese speaking people? Some of the friends I’m traveling with are from there.
Stop it! lol
It’s your funeral, friend. But Chicago has changed drastically since you were there last. There aren’t any more “safe” neighborhoods. The Morlocks have the run of the streets now.
The CPD has had all time off canceled for the Holiday weekend. A friend of ours is a canine officer so the info is legit. The weather is going to be very warm this weekend and that always ups the body count. The cops will be busy drawing chalk outlines on the streets in Englewood and Garfield Park so they won’t be downtown to keep dumb tourists safe.
Buddy’s place is still open but I sure wouldn’t be walking around there after the show. Uber there and back. If you’re really dumb you could check out Checkerboard lounge. But that’s not a neighborhood you want to be in any time of the day.
Michigan Ave is dangerous after dark these days. Hell, there was a gunfight at the McDonalds by the Red Line stop just last week in broad daylight.
If you insist on going out keep your head on a swivel. Go straight to your destination and straight back and take a cab or an Uber.
Good luck. Hope I don’t see you as a statistic on heyjackass.com.

“Is there anything of interest for Vietnamese speaking people””
Take them to Chinatown. That’s still relatively calm and it’s not far from the Loop. Do NOT leave that neighborhood on foot, tho.
Korea town is good, too but it’s not near the Loop. It’s way north off the Kennedy so walking there is definitely out.

No area of Chicago is safe now and certainly not at night. We sold our condo just off Michigan Ave a few years ago and we don’t go back.
ChicagoConservative might be someone to talk with?
Not that I'm aware of. Now if you had Chinese-speaking people, of course there's Chinatown. Which BTW has had its own issues with the gang bangers and hoodrats robbing and killing them.
There's been a rash of muggings and beatings that have gone unreported (I hear them on the main dispatch for CPD). Best to go in a group if going at all.
Why in the world would a sane person deliberately go to Chicago?
Blink twice if you’re being kidnapped!
