Semi truck drivers ‘booted’ after parking overnight at Gardner Walmart

GARDNER, Ks. (KCTV) - A group of truckers thought they were safe to stay the night in a Walmart parking lot.

But when Gina Eager and others woke up to roll out they found an unwelcome surprise.

“When we went to go pick up our load we found out we had a boot,” Eager said.

Eager said she spent the morning talking with a store manager, as well as Walmart’s corporate office. She said she was told unauthorized truck parking is not allowed at the store, and that she and the other drivers would have to pay towing fees

Several signs posted around the lot warned drivers that their trucks could be towed if they parked in the lot without permission. But Eager said she has never had a problem parking at other stores for her mandatory 10 hour rest period in between trips.

Some of the truckers here leave a big mess, piss bottles, trash, etc... the Wall-mart employees shouldn't have to clean up the mess that some of these folks leave behind. Our Wall-mart has large no over night parking signs to try to curb the problem. There is still a handfull of trucks that park there anyway. We have a truck stop less then 1/2 a mile down the road.

I don't know this particular store but I suspect they are tired of telling the truckers to clean up after themselves. Towing or booting a couple of them might get the point across, it is sad that it has come to this action.

100% my opinion. Based on observations, and knowing several wall-mart employees.

” truckers here leave a big mess, piss bottles, trash, etc”

Boot the truck then offer them the option of clearing the Walmart area of trash or being towed. Doing police call in the military make me extremely anti-litter.

“As far as Walmart will withhold judgement pending the rest of the story, however, why couldn’t they knock on the door warning the trucker they’re about to be “booted”. “

~~~
Yep. That’s vindictive. Don’t warn them. Just tow them. Then on top of all that, tell them they got to pay the tow/impound fees to get their property back. F Walmart
I’m sorry but what do you mean “rest of the story”? They parked in a area that says no overnight parking. The end. Follow the rules and you don’t get your truck booted. The end.
For years, semi’s and RV’s could over nite at Walmart. I have done so occasionally.
At my local Walmart, the practice has apparently ceased. I don’t see trucks and especially RV’s in the area formerly designated
So, there must have been change as a result of some lawsuit
Of course, the truckers could just park at a truck stop. For a small fee, they get electrical hook ups and for another small fee they can get a hot shower, then for a huge fee they can fuel up.
Then just add those fees to the hauling fee and let the consumer pay.
Our local Walmart seems to have no problem with Semis parking over nite and to that I say thanks and continue shopping & complaining at Walmart.
I know in the big scheme, it doesn’t save much, but now in Biden’s America every penny counts
By the rest of the story I’m talking common courtesy, such as asking them to leave before being booted.
Now Walmart may have tried that then Trucker’s became belligerent causing Walmart to just boot and tow, that could be the rest of the story.
The local Walmart here in SW Pennsylvania off of Interstate 70 used to have signs all over their parking lot about no overnight parking. A few years ago the signs disappeared and the trucks park there. They do stay in the very back corner and do not park up by the cars.
Today’s Steering Wheel Holders are very messy and do not care about much of anything other than when do they get paid. My closest Wal Mart is right next to I-30 and at first they allowed them to park there till the mess and blocking customers from shopping become a problem so they put up low clearance steel structures over all the entrances. These Steering Wheel Holders hit them about 8-10 times a year..They get arrested and truck towed then.
I am speculating: It sounds like they dropped the trailer and went back to pick it up. Otherwise, they would have realized they were getting as boot on their trucks.
I understand stores not wanting the liability of having vehicles and cargo on their property.
I don’t have a solution, but its the store’s property. They can decide to do what they want on it.
Most store parking lots are mainly made of asphalt laid over packed gravel. 18 wheelers weighing 80,000 pounds can ruin that pretty quick especially in the hot summertime.
At the Walmart near me...you would park in the lot for about 15 minutes before realizing you did not have the proper parapets, moats, and defensive structures to survive the evening.
So you want Walmart workers to make hourly trips to the parking lots and bang on trucks asking them to move? That’s really stupid. That’s why they put up a sign.
It is most likely a local ordinance. Walmarts across the country use to allow overnight parking for anyone. Now, with the van lifers and homeless living in ratty old RVs have been trashing the parking lots so the local cities said no over night parking anywhere. I stopped at one walmart in Oregon and saw old RVs that had been there for who knows how long, with couches outside, bbqs, piles of trash, and dogs tied up outside.
There should be an exception for truckers, anywhere, because of the rules. Truck stops and rest areas are now nearly impossible to find spaces for the mandated rest period.
Pretty crappy of Walmart to treat truckers that way, especially in these times.
