THE ADVANCE AGAINST RICHMOND: OUR ARMY MAKING GOOD PROGRESS; Seizure of the Railway Bridge Across the Chickahominy (5/21/1862)

WHITE HOUSE, Va., Monday, May 19. The army commenced moving at an early hour this morning in the direction of Richmond, and will encamp some miles in advance of this place. The advance, under Gen. STONEMAN, reached the railroad bridge at the Chickahominy yesterday. It is a long tressle bridge, two spans only of which are burned. It can be rebuilt in a very short time. The pickets of the enemy are guarding the whole line of the river in front of Richmond, making it very difficult to obtain any reliable information from that city.

Gen. MCCLELLAN went on a reconnoissance, to-day, to the Chickahominy.

The programme of operations in front of Richmond will soon be decided upon.

THE ADVANCE AT COLD HARBOR.

TUNSTAL's STATION, Tuesday, May 20.

The advance, under Gen. STONEMAN, reached Cold Harbor, on the road running to Richmond, by way of Maw Bridge, yesterday, where he found the enemy to be in force. He drove their pickets in to within two miles of their main body, and encamped for the night.

Everything indicates that the rebels intend to defend Richmond with all the available force they are able to bring forward. Congressmen and representatives from every Southern State are there, encouraging their troops by their presence and counsel to a determined resistance to an advance of the Union troops.

[Cold Harbor, which has been reached by our cavalry, is less than ten miles northeast of Richmond, and is in the southern part of Hanover County, which adjoins Henrico County, in which Richmond is situated. It is not on the line of the railroad, but on a turnpike, which runs directly to the rebel capital. It would seem that Gen. MCCLELLAN is extending his lines northward preparatory to acting upon Richmond from that direction. -- ED. TIMES.]
