This is how WW1 began.
Instead of just another of European border adjustments (of dozens in modern history), alliances and mandatory calls for mutual guaranteed war led to tens of millions dead, and the "flower of Europe" buried in Flanders Field.
Many would say that WW2 was just WW1, continued, and that Europe has never recovered.

It’s a way to skirt the Wars Act. We are in a war without a declaration. We have troops deployed in Poland and Romania, US Advisors in Ukraine, supplying Ukraine with billions in weapons and now this. Make no mistake about it, we are in a war against Russia.
