This is a question for my fellow Freepers: I have a Ukrainian family living here in Annapolis, Maryland with me. We crossed the border with Mexico at Tijuana in April. One person has a tourist visa issued by the U.S. Consulate in Ukraine. The other two were issued "Humanitarian Visas" by the Department of Homeland Security at the border.
We applied for human services benefits through Maryland Gov. for food stamps etc.
We applied for Social Security cards for two of our people so that they could apply for work in area businesses (both are college educated and speak acceptable English).
The answer in both cases was the same. Because these are "Humanitarian Visas" and not "Refugee Visas" they are precluded from working or receiving benefits from Social Services.
My question to fellow Freepers is this: Have any of you had this same experience and if so, what did you do about it.
Humble thanks
If it were me, I’d present myself at the southern border (again) and “identify” as Haitian. (Cheer up the Border Patrol). ;)
“As if the 100k or more of Afghani savages and the millions more coming over the border aren’t enough.”
Ukrainians are European stock—like most Americans. (Unless you prefer overstocking with “Diversity”).
She arrived legally and received a humanitarian visa good for one year.
I have not applied for any benefits of any sort. I don't think she qualifies for any. I am her unofficial sponsor (I never filled out an I-134 Affidavit of Support, she just wrote down my name at the border). I still don't know what to do about health care. My family is insured but if anything catastrophic happens to her, I don't know if I'd be on the hook or not.
Earlier this week I helped her fill out an I-765 Authorization for Employment. This will get her a SSN and allow her to work in the United States. It is normally a $410 fee but if you read the 31 page instruction book, it appears that people here under humanitarian parole have this fee waved.
That's about all I know.
Worked in their med clinic for a few years.
It was run by a bunch of Muslim who came to the US right after the overthrow of the Shah. Struck me as normal, kind Americans.
Can’t vouch for the ones who came later.
We applied for human services benefits through Maryland Gov. for food stamps etc.
... which directly contradicts this:
I have enough money to take care of my people for as long as necessary. I brought them all of the way here on my own dime.
If you have enough money to take care of them for as long as necessary, then just do it. Leave your fellow taxpayers out of it.
Actually, Jimmy, checking your sign up date, and scanning your archive, was the very FIRST thing I did!
Hmmm, this is interesting.
The last time Jimmy posted an article or posted a vanity was - 13 years ago!
Long nap, Jimmy?
Also, the Ukraine issue has suddenly consumed almost all your activity.
Rough count - about 250 Jimmy comments on the Ukraine war.
Thanks in advance for your next Troll Tirade.
When $40 billion of taxpayers’ money is not enough.
West Ukraine is pretty safe right now and so is Poland.
I’ll take Ukrainians all day. Especially them women. No issues there. The unfortunate thing are the people being used as pawns and the ones suffering the most, coupled with the gross incompetence of this administration and all the blatant corruption.
Tell your Ukrainian friends to learn Spanish and to make friends in the Hispanic community. They know every welfare trick on the books.
I am serious. Or send them to a church that is dominated by Hispanic immigrants. To make friends.
Almost as much as O’bummer, Jimmy Carter changed American history.
Big thanks for this. Biden made huge promises to the Ukrainian diaspora and has proceeded to reverse himself on every one. I guess white educated conservatives are too upsetting and he needs more diseased unlettered Hispanics to make him feel better.
