This is a question for my fellow Freepers: I have a Ukrainian family living here in Annapolis, Maryland with me. We crossed the border with Mexico at Tijuana in April. One person has a tourist visa issued by the U.S. Consulate in Ukraine. The other two were issued "Humanitarian Visas" by the Department of Homeland Security at the border.
We applied for human services benefits through Maryland Gov. for food stamps etc.
We applied for Social Security cards for two of our people so that they could apply for work in area businesses (both are college educated and speak acceptable English).
The answer in both cases was the same. Because these are "Humanitarian Visas" and not "Refugee Visas" they are precluded from working or receiving benefits from Social Services.
My question to fellow Freepers is this: Have any of you had this same experience and if so, what did you do about it.

When I was younger I brought my new bride and her children here from Australia. I fully understood that I was responsible for them. You brought these people here. You are solely responsible for them. If I were you, I’d buy the women cleaning equipment and get them to work as maids. Buy the men some lawn mowers and get them to work cutting grass. That’s the American way. America is in debt around $100 Trillion dollars. That’s what you brought them here for, to be owners of their fair share of that debt. Get them to work.

This would mean they did not cross the border illegal. They got a visa. The visa will expire.
Bringing in family members is non trivial. You have a lot of reading to do. Entitlement does not extend to not reading the rules.
You will probably be considered their sponsor, correct? They won’t be able to collect welfare IIRC.

Gardner & Gordon is one of the oldest immigration firms you will need a mess of legal help. The fact that they got visas before entry is good as they won’t be banned from future green cards. Humanitarian visas mean they are on your dime you should habe noticed that when you signed as their sponsorship.

This is a first-hand account. We crossed the border entirely legally. My US Passport, my wife’s tourist visa and the humanitarian visas granted by Homeland Security at the border.
I have worked and paid taxes for well over 52 years and need no lectures about how I’m robbing your pockets. I have enough money to take care of my people for as long as necessary. I brought them all of the way here on my own dime. I am rather taken aback at all of the derisory and unkind commentary from people who should know better

My daughter brought over her finance (now husband) and was responsible until he can legally work in the US. The same should apply to your extended family. No government aid from my tax money. When they can be self sufficient, God bless them. Until that time, it’s your problem.

Well your original post appears to be a bit lacking in information, ie...that you have a US passport, which completely changes the dynamic.
However, if she’s your wife, then she’s a citizen, is she not? And if you have enough money to take care of them, why all the questions.
You mention two other people that received, humanitarian visas(whatever they are), who are they? Are they here under some type of refugee status? If they are refugees, then they’re entitled benefits, are they not? Oh wait, CornPop isn’t giving the Ukrainians refugee status if I remember reading.

As for the derision and unkind commentary.....I’m betting that your wife and whoever else were NOT the ones funneling money to Biden and the rest of Congress. I’m betting that they’re not part of the oligarchy that has been robbing the US blind and kicking back money to our politicians. Like everyone else on this site, I’m sure, I/we feel horrible for the civilians caught up in the whole thing.
However.....NOT OUR EFFIN’ PROBLEM. I don’t care how bad the Russians are, the only reason this has lasted this long is because of help from the outside world, mainly the US. Reports say that we’ve depleted our stockpiles of Stingers and Javelin’s.
Oh yeah....one more thing....we’ve given the Ukrainians $14,000,000,000 in aid so far...and the crooks in DC are about to approve another $40,000,000,000...all while EVERYTHING in the US is costing more and getting worse and babies can’t get formula.
On top of all of that, over 2,000,000 illegals poured into this country, middle of the night flights dispersing them all over the country, refugees pouring in...and then we have that little debacle in Afghanistan last year where over 100,000 Afghans poured into the country, over 97% of whom did not help the US or the US military in any way and we have no way of knowing who they are. AND THEY’RE ALL GETTING PAID.
