'This is Spinal Tap' sequel in the works with Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer returning

The band is getting back together.

A sequel is in the works to the 1984 rock mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap," with director Rob Reiner returning alongside stars Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer.

The movie package will launch sales at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. It will be released on March, 19 2024, tied to the 40th anniversary of the original.

The sequel will be in the style of Martin Scorsese’s "The Last Waltz," the legendary concert documentary that followed the farewell tour of the Canadian American rock group The Band.

"Spinal Tap 2" will also feature real-life musicians in the film. No names have been revealed yet, but it will likely depend on the artists’ touring schedules.

"This Is Spinal Tap," which debuted on March 2, 1984, chronicled the lives of the fictional English heavy metal band members – played by McKean, Guest and Shearer – during their American tour. Reiner portrayed documentarian Martin "Marty" Di Bergi, and the film marked his directorial debut. McKean played David St. Hubbins, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist; Guest was Nigel Tufnel, the lead guitarist; and Shearer portrayed Derek Smalls, the band’s bassist.

I wonder if they will get the Stonehenge props right this time.

We own them all on DVD and it’s hard to pick a favorite. We couldn’t get into Waiting for Gufman, really, but other than that, they are comedy gold in much the same way Firesign Theater was. Subtle humor that may not cause you to LOL, but very funny and more enjoyable than that.

Absolutely love the original, but I can’t help but think Meathead is going to slip some wokeness into this one and ruin it.

My guess is that it only goes to about 6.5.

It was a total cult classic.

Unfortunately, with Meathead returning, I have no hope at all that it won’t be a trivialized left-wing trope.

“We’re not gonna go into a free flowing jam in front of a festival crowd.”

“Boston isn’t much of a college town.”

“Our Stonehenge is in danger of being trampled by a dwarf.”

Not all movies need a sequel.

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It’s just not really widely reported.

I almost called that one out. 🤣

The way she presents that information is comedy gold! The looks on his face are funny too.

Best In Show was also fantastic

One of our all time favorites! And this was actually a sequel to Spinal Tap in the Mockumentary series. We especially loved the lawyer couple wearing braces. We knew a couple that reminded us so much of those two at the time.

It could be awesome. Christopher Guest is brilliant, I love most of his movies. Heavy metal is a vastly different world now, they could do a lot with Spinal Tap changing to try to be relevant, or getting the “grand old man” treatment.

Might as well make “Flipper: The Movie”, or a remake of ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’. I have zero interest in this, though I loved the original at a point in time.

I also don’t want to do anything that in any way profits people who are out to destroy my way of life.

Yes, you do. There is so much more.

Interestingly, I have several New Christy Minstrels LP’s. One of the bands in the movie is a total ripoff of that.
