Last year was deadliest year on record for line-of-duty police death, but 2022 may surpass it.
A police officer is murdered every five days, and most of them never had a chance to defend themselves against their killer. That was one of the findings in a recent report in Law Enforcement Today. The headline of this article says it all, “Terrifying report shows that there’s a record number of police officers who have been completely ambushed and murdered”
The number of police officer deaths is at a record high, primarily because of COVID, so it is easy to dismiss the 617 officers killed in the line of duty in 2021 or the 103 who have died so far this year because COVID skewed the numbers. However, dig deeper and you find COVID isn’t the only disturbing number among officer deaths.
In 2021, 73 were feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2021, according to the FBI. Almost half of these officers did not even have a chance to defend themselves. In other words, they were ambushed.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said in January, “These four murders brought the total number of officers feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2021 to 73, the highest annual number since the 9/11 attacks. That’s the equivalent of one officer murdered every five days. In a year when homicides and violent crime reached distressing levels, this 20-year high hasn’t received the attention it deserves.”
The Officer Down Memorial Page lists the number of felonious deaths at 111. This is more than two officers a week killed.

Cops are on the defensive, both culturally (Defund The Police)and on the street. It’s cool to beat down cops on TV and especially music so the next logical step is do act upon killing the “pigs”

Police are being ambushed because the murderers know the police are armed and the killers don’t want a “fair gunfight.”
The only way to stop this is to hunt down every one of these vicious killers to the ends of the Earth and never take any one of them prisoner. The word will get out.
What these barbarians must learn is there will be no surrender or mercy when they are located. There will be no “prosecutorial discretion.”

Policing is not “dangerous.”
On the average, there are 14 deaths on the job per 100,000 police officers in America:
Loggers 136 fatalities/100,000. 136/14. It’s 970% more dangerous to be logger than a cop
Fisherman 86/100K. 86/14. It’s 614% more dangerous to be a fisherman than a cop
Pilots 55.5/100K. 55.5/14. It’s 400% more dangerous to be a pilot than a cop
Roofers 48.6/100K. 48.6/14. It’s 350% more dangerous to be a roofer than a cop
Refuse & Recyclable Material Collectors 34.1/100K. 34.1/14. It’s 244% more dangerous to be a trash collector than a cop
Structural Iron and Steel Workers 25.1/100K. 25.1/14. It’s 170% more dangerous to be an iron workers than a cop
Truck Drivers 24.7/100K. 24.7/14. It’s 176% more dangerous to be a truck driver than a cop

The truth is that if officers 1) weren’t charged with enforcing dictates which have NOTHING to do with “keeping the peace” and 2) weren’t panicked by their training officers to imagine some violent criminal just itching to shoot at them lurking in every shadow.... they would and should feel FAR safer as a cop than any of the jobs above.
In the 105 officers who died on duty this year, here is how those deaths slotted out:
Going away the leading cause of death is Covid 19.... NOT gunfire.
Covid was responsible for 55 of the deaths. Gunfire is not the SECOND cause of death, either. It is vehicle crashes, with 22. So, out of 105 or so deaths so far this year 50% of those deaths are attributed to Covid. 20% were caused by auto accidents (some chase, some just normal wrecks, some by vehicular assault, and others non specified auto accident). That accounts for 70% of the deaths..., not “ambush” nor a gunfight.
Gunfire, that horrible persistent terror that strikes the heart of every quavering terror stricken victim who puts on the uniform....., well, that came in at 17 out of 105. 16.2%.
While this is awful, this is hardly the John Wayne wannabee who bravely goes out to face the day and spits in the face of fear saying “I may not come back today, but I will courageously face down the terrible risk because the public needs me to lay down my life.”
That is the silliest nonsense I have ever heard. It is not backed by FACT at all, but rather supported by a shrill emoting that belongs more in a 7th grade girls sleepover from pubescents having their first period and not quite sure what to do with all these “feels.”
The REAL reason that officers should be afraid is rather in the way they cause mistrust, fear, and hatred among those they are supposed to serve.
It boils down to this:
Cops believe that doing their job the way citizens want will make it harder and make them less safe.
The citizens think that determining how the police do their job is up to the citizens, not the police, and if the officers don’t want to do it the way the citizens paying for the service want it done then they shouldn’t take the job in the first place.
The police think their tactics are proper, but the citizens they’re supposed to be serving, their customers, think their tactics are wrong.
When the people providing a service want to do it one way and the people paying for the service want it done in another way, the job needs to be done the way the customers want it done.
The police are there to provide a service to the citizens. The citizens, not the police, get the ultimate say on how the police can and cannot provide that service.
Bottom line, in order to fix this problem, the officers are going to have to accept the fundamental rule that they cannot engage in conduct that the average citizen considers to be overbearing, bullying, intrusive, dangerous, insulting or harmful no matter how much safer the police think they would be doing the job the way they want.
Histrionic wails about “officer safety” and justifying acts like this (https://www.yahoo.com/news/cops-charged-horrific-bodycam-shows-203149886.html) that if I were to do them would (rightly) result in a murder charge is only going to cause more hostility to police and thus LESS safety to officers.
Why this is not obvious to anyone who can cognize “2+2=4” is truly a mystery to me.

We were warned of an attempt to federalize the police way back in 1968-1969 by independent news papers.
Because obama said they should be.
