The family of a 10-year-old girl who choked herself to death as part of a TikTok challenge is suing the video platform for negligence and having a 'defective design.'
Nylah Anderson of Philadelphia was found unconscious in her mom's bedroom closet on December 7.
She hung herself from a purse strap after seeing videos related to the 'blackout challenge' on the app's 'For You' page, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court in Pennsylvania.
The challenge encourages users to asphyxiate themselves, pass out and regain consciousness on camera.
Nylah's mother Tawainna says the company is to blame for her death because the content 'was thrust in front of' her.
'I cannot stop replaying this day in my head,' Tawainna said at a press conference Thursday. 'The unbreakable bond in our family is now shattered and void.'
Last year, a 12-year-old boy died after using a shoelace to choke himself for the same challenge, his family says.

That is awful!
a) This is awful
b) 10 yo shouldn’t have cell phones or at very least shouldn’t be on tiktok or have unsupervised internet access. Period.
With a mother as stupid as she had, Im surprised the poor kid made it to 10.
Blame some app!..... What ever happened to parenting???
Why does a 10 year old girl have direct access to TikTok? The parents are to blame and should be punished as well.
but social media managed to take down every Trump tweet in record time, and prevent many anti-vax videos from even being posted....
Is this done with a Tide Pod and an ice bucket? Or did I just start something?
This game was around seventy years ago when I was a child. I never saw the payoff in blacking out, besides my mother warned me never put anything around my neck, you’ll die! There’s no end to stupid things people do. When my son was in the Cub Scouts they had a toothpaste eating challenge. I told him he was going to sit this one out. That’s why children need intelligent parents, none of the other adults knew fluoride can be toxic.
"choked herself to death"
"She hung herself from a purse strap after seeing videos related to the 'blackout challenge'"
BTW, Morgana.. why should ANY parent give a “smartphone” to any kid (in this day and age)?
A simple (restricted) flip-phone should be good enough (for emergencies).. I think they also have tracking capabilities (for parents to keep them (kids) out of trouble).
"Blame some app!..."
We did something similar in the schoolyard in the early 50s loooong before cell phones. It involved taking deep breaths, having someone wrap there arms tightly around your middle and doubling you over for a bit. Upon release, one would be disoriented and possibly faint. Told my Dad about it and he went through the roof. The next day myself and one or two other kids put the kibosh on the practice. That fad lasted about one lunchtime...possibly two, but it stopped as quickly as it started.
Where are all those cheery folks making the argument that if you’re stupid enough to fall for something so lame, we’re better off without you.....?
I would never give a kid a cell phone, btw.
Yes...and self evident!

...............
That is satanic.
I hate TikTok...it pops up on my Pinterest...which is private (no followers, no followees)
Their first thought is to sue the app? No child should be exposed to this trash. No kid should have access to it, or twitter, or any of the other social media without strict rules.
I forgot. Parents don’t make rules any more.
Trump was right about this garbage app.
Someone on FR posted links to Tik Tok the other day. I watched some of the videos. I lost about 5 points off my IQ, and I can’t afford that.
In the late 50s, this went around our school: cover your mouth and pinch your nostrils together, and hold your breath until you pass out. I did it one evening in my room, fell to the floor with a thud, and my Dad came upstairs running. It was one of the few times I did NOT get punished for being out of order -- he was genuinely alarmed and of course told me never to do it again.
