On a high does of high blood pressure meds for 38 years. My doctor says it’s just part of me, there’s nothing I can do about it, he called it idiopathic. Went on a low carb diet. I lost 37 pounds and stopped the BP meds. I have been taking my blood pressure readings three times a day just to make sure the readings are normal. My blood pressure has been normal to low for the past nine weeks - average 118/71.5.
I’m amazed and a little pissed that I didn’t figure it out along time ago. My arthritis pain is gone. Most amazingly, once I have adapted I no longer have cravings for sugar or grains. In the past my cravings were off the charts leading to years of weight loss then weight gain - yo-yo land. If somebody would’ve told me I would have a lack of cravings after weight loss I don’t know if I would’ve believed it.
Not that I am aware of
.
No prescription needed to the best of my knowledge.
Amazon has a pretty good selection of them.
A decent one will probably run you at least $30.
You will also need a lancing device and lancets to prick
your finger to get a drop of blood to put on the test strip
that is inserted into the meter.
And you will also need sterile alcohol swabs/wipes.
So what you need is:
1. The glucometer
2. And the proper test strips for it
3. A lancing device
4. And the proper lancets for it
5. Sterile alcohol swabs
.
You can get all of this stuff at a local drugstore, like Walgreens.
You can also save a couple of bucks by getting the stuff
from Amazon - but I do NOT recommend trying to get the
alcohol swabs from them - takes weeks or even months to
get them delivered. I have no idea why.
I'm pretty sure that you do NOT need a prescription for any of this.
I'm not a doctor, just a 57 year old man who has had
Type 2 diabetes for over a dozen years. So I know a bit
about this stuff. More than I wish I needed to.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about
blood sugar testing supplies to help out a fellow Freeper -
to the best of my ability.
Good Luck, Madam!
Thank you. I will check in to it.
Don’t know how much metformin you’re taking, but my reading says anything less than 2000 mg/day is ineffective.
A lot of folks get the strips via Medicaid or Medicare and then sell them for cash. The ‘hood is full of utility pole signs: “we buy diabetic test strips”
In early February my A1C was 9.5. Weight 285, height 5’9”. Started keto (was on metformin 2000mg/day for two years but ate anything and lots of carbs). Anyway - keto diet using CarbManager as an app and bought a ketomojo meter for ketones and glucose. Just last week, A1C is 6.3, weight 255. And I exercise daily after dinner and also only eat between 10AM and 6PM. It’s a lifestyle change. Hoping to kick the meds soon.
Well done!
Available at every CVS, Walgreens and Walmart. Many available on Amazon.
I use the AgaMatrix Presto which I got on Amazon. I have never seen any AgaMatrix meters in stores, only on Amazon, but it seems to be a good brand. The consumables (strips, calibration fluid) are reasonably priced. I don’t check multiple times a day — just every week or so in the morning to look for any trends.
“you will also need sterile alcohol swabs/wipes.”
I just wash my hands well per the Agamatrix recommendation. I’ve never used an alcohol swab. Seems to work fine.
A little hydrogen peroxide on a paper towel/napkin works also.
I do that when I run out of alcohol swabs. Less expensive also.
(Not that scrimping down to that last penny is an issue.)
You are most welcome!
its not just sugar...its carbs....
Almost all "sugar free" and "fat free" foods you can buy in a grocery store are a massive scam. They often replace sugar with something that is even worse.
Now there are good, sweet, non-glycemic sugar substitutes, but they tend to be very expensive or cause digestive issues in large amounts. As a result, foods that are really sugar free that won't make you fat or spike insulin are both expensive and hard to find.
And anything labeled "fat free" should be considered to be about as palatable as rat poison. Any doctor or nutrition promoting a low fat diet seriously needs to catch up on their reading.
“I figure, I’m getting my body USED to high blood sugar levels.”
You always were such a sweetie.

Exercise for T2 diabetics is most beneficial AFTER dinner, as this will help mitigate the blood sugar spike that can stick with you throughout the sleeping hours.]]
Much has been made of the “Mediterranean Diet”, but one traditional part of Mediterranean lifestyle (at least when I visited rural Italy) is that the main meal of the day is at noon. They have a light breakfast, a light evening supper, but the main meal is around noon, thus giving you the rest of the day to work off the blood sugar.
With so many of us working from home, this is more easily accomplished now.
Well c’mon, I didn’t say a person can eat an all-carb diet.
