SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE N.Y. TIMES.

FORTRESS MONROE, Wednesday, May 7. Via BALTIMORE, Thursday, May 8.

The boat from Yorktown to-day brings reports from the army to 12 o'clock M. The enemy was still in full retreat, and followed closely by our cavalry.

Constant skirmishing between our advance and their rear guard was kept up.

The enemy seems disposed to contest every inch of the way -- at least to make a safe retreat.

The rebels burnt their gunboat in York River yesterday morning.

We have taken many prisoners in small companies, but I cannot learn of any large body having been captured. Two companies of the Eighth Illinois Cavalry are reported captured by the enemy.

The enemy was driven out of Williamsburgh early on Monday morning. Our troops rushed over their works and drove them from their trenches by a desperate bayonet charge.

Gen. MCCLELLAN was struck by a piece of shell but was not injured.

The opinion prevails here that if FRANKLIN's Division receive reinforcements in time a great part of the rebel army will be captured.

The roads are in a very bad condition, by which our advance is greatly impeded.

The Excelsior Brigade (SICKLES') lost at our 240 men in killed and wounded. I can get at but few names of those lost, as the confusion is so great that details are hard to be obtained. The following are the names of some of the killed in Sickles' Brigade:

Lieut. BAILEY.

WOUNDED.
Capt. GREENLEAF, severely.
Lieut. HARTNEY, seriously.
Lieut. MARCUS, seriously.
Sergeant-Major CLARKE, seriously.
Sergeant PACKARD, seriously.
Capt. JOHNSON, seriously.
Capt. WATERMAN, seriously.
Assistant Adjt.-Gen. HART was struck by four balls.
