The 29-year-old will become the 14th Time Lord on the popular science fiction show, and the first non-white performer to play the lead role.
Scottish actor Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, is best known for starring in Netflix's sitcom Sex Education.
The Queer As Folk and It's A Sin creator, who is returning to Doctor Who after departing in 2009, posted a selfie with Gatwa on the Baftas red carpet
That's not to put aside the fact he's an exceptionally gifted young actor. He's absolutely brilliant. He's been nominated for the Bafta for all three series of Sex Education, so he's not just been cast because of what he can demographically bring in.
It's a double bonus because he can bring in that demographic and in theory give a fantastic performance as the Doctor

Several of the male Doctors have come across as ambiguously gay.
Determined to kill the franchise aren’t they!
What’s Scottish about a Rwandan?
so he’s not just been cast because of what he can demographically bring in.
Dr. Who Cares!!!???
Gunner
Dr Crap.
Can’t just be Black anymore.
Not woke enough.
Haven’t watched modern Doctor Who in years. I’ll stick with the classic era.
Repulsive.
The BBC lefties doubling down on stupid.
Haven’t watched modern Doctor Who in years.
When someone says “gifted actor” I hear “weirdo psychopath”
It’s a pattern.
Where is the gift?
A regular actor is fine. Keanu Reaves, Gary Sinise.. there are good actors.
But when someone says “gifted” I get an idea of what they really mean.
Also.. “can bring in that demographic” means that someone out there was like “hey! I identify solely by the color of my skin and I love putting things in my butt and acting like a child! I’m going to watch this terrible science fiction show and buy all the products advertised during it!”
I stopped watching after the first episode of the lady Doctor. Now I don’t think I will resume.
What endeared many viewers to the Doctors was their occasionally being silly clowns. Especially Matt Smith, in his interactions with River Song.
With the female Doctor, writers could no longer have the Doctor be comic relief, or less than “perfect in every way”.
With a gay black doc, it will be similar.
That’s not to put aside the fact he’s an exceptionally gifted young actor.

If you have to state it, then there’s a problem.
Gay black guy to be Dr Who? Where’s the dead horse to kick now?
They mean Denzel. An actor who can play both “The Equalizer” and the lead in “Fences”. Might be the best living actor.
