EVs are interesting. Fast as heck. But, there are so many considerations that haven’t been addressed. The most glaring of which are:
Lack of charging stations
Charging time
The capability of the electric grid
Availability of resources such as lithium
To go all in on EVs is breathtakingly stupid. I can’t imagine the car makers suddenly got as stupid as Joe Biden, so I’m guessing there’s a huge push by world governments. The execs at the car makers may not be stone stupid, but politicians are.
Yes, Ford and other ICE companies trying to compete with Tesla reminds me of all those poor suckers who tried to get in on multilevel marketing schemes after it was too late.
There are always people at the very top of the pyramid who got rich - and they make it seem like if you do the same thing they did, you’ll get to the top one day.
Trouble is, if you look at a pyramid - the top is very, very small.
I think the carmakers are all reading what way the political wind is blowing. They know governments are itching to ban ICE vehicles and the fuels they run on. The marketers, who hyper-focus on the <40 crowd for future sales, know the Millennials and Gen Z kiddos want “Green” transportation. They have decided the smart thing is to follow the market and let the problems solve themselves.
The pendulum will probably swing the other way in a few years as the reality of these problems rear their ugly head, but lithium battery tech has made electric cars possible and they will be a part of the market from now on.
