'Running Out Of Spare Parts': Plenty Of Pain Ahead For Russia's Economy

At first glance, Russia may seem to be adapting to the tough new sanctions imposed by Western countries over its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

The ruble, which tumbled in the first days of the war to a record low, rebounded to its highest level since early 2020 this week. Grocery stores in Moscow are still filled with food, albeit at much higher prices, and revenue from the sale of oil and gas continues to flow into the budget.

But Russia's economy is anything but out of the woods, Elina Ribakova, deputy chief economist at the Washington-based Institute of International Finance (IIF), told RFE/RL's Russian Service in an interview. The country is entering what is likely to be a very tough period as the impact of the sanctions gradually sets in, she says. "Everyone is running out of spare parts, export markets have disappeared, many [companies] cannot continue production," Ribakova said, citing evidence form a recent Russian central bank report.

The United States, the European Union, and other allies have barred exports to Russia of key technology, such as microprocessors -- or chips -- used in the production of many manufactured goods, including cars and planes.

Meanwhile, many Western companies have voluntarily announced they will no longer do business in Russia, such as suppliers of components or services to the manufacturing industry….

"If the war doesn't end soon, the West will not only move ahead with plans to end energy dependence on Russia, it could also deploy the roughly $300 billion in frozen Russian central-bank funds to rebuild Ukraine's economy."

The head of the Russion central bank is a Soros puppet, trying to upset Putards with this.

Probably not a good idea to rejoice in the pain being suffered by the Russian people due to Putin’s catastrophic bad decision and American retribution. The Sicilians are not the only people who savor revenge.

The Russians have been pissed off for 500 years.

This is just a “re-charge.”

Soon Russia is going to lose a large amount oil production, due to having to shut wells that are in Siberian permafrost. Very difficult to restart those.

There’s a guy that runs a YouTube channel called Mentour Pilot. He’s a 737 pilot based over in Europe somewhere. He’s done several videos about what is happening with Russian civilian aviation and what is likely to happen due to the sanctions. Good stuff, fairly in-depth. Short version: in the short term they’ll be ok, mid to long term Russian civilian aviation is impaled on a shaft with a helically wrapped inclined plane...

All while the Russian Ruble has recovered well - maybe even stronger than the pre-Ukraine invasion. China is bolstering them.

What gets me about the articles celebrating the poor Russian economy is the absolute lack of awareness of the type of trouble most people in the west are in. Who cares about the Russian situation when so many people here are under water, cost of living is absolutely unsustainable. No one seems to care. It’s crazy.

China will help them out. Yeah, china doesn’t do anything for free. Watch china take over Russia in the next yr as china is hurting for fuel and food.

Right out of the Art of War. Help your enemy destroy itself.

over its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

I see the exact same editorial BS as we do when MSM discussed January 6, Impeachment(s), George Floyd, etc... They make sure to use their correct adjectives right at the beginning, to frame the argument for the sheeple.

Saddam Hussein promised the mother of all battles. Napoleon had his Waterloo. Custer had the Little Big Horn. Japan paid the price for Pearl Harbor. What’s there to know? It’s governments. Leaders influenced by elites.

A Lew Rockwell column written by a fella named Chuck Burris brings up all lies that led us into our wars. Thought provoking but I have to say that war is unavoidable in different peoples. Throw in the minerals in the ground of 3rd world countries and it gets worse. We are at war with all muslims. No oil would make them non-threatening.

Who pays for the management of the Chernobyl site? Under the “you broke it you bought it” principle, the Russians as successors to the Soviet Union, should be paying the freight. How expensive the maintenance of the site is, in normal times, is not clear. I have read estimates that from the date of the accident until 2016 more than $728B was spent in response to the accident, and that the cost of the new containment structure installed in 2017-2018 was $4.5B.

So, $300B will not go too far given the infrastructure destruction and the Chernobyl maintenance costs, which I’m just guessing the Russians will stop paying.

What, do you expect every article to focus on the US economy when that isn’t the topic of the article?

We all know what shape the US economy is in, because we are living in it. That may be why nobody is posting hundreds of articles a day about it. It’s not exactly “news” to anyone at this point.

Leaders influenced by elites.....Leaders influenced by corporations, banks and greed.

I think this sums it up, although the commodities and/or, treasures sought, have changed.

The Banana Wars: How The U.S. Plundered Central America On Behalf Of Corporations

https://allthatsinteresting.com/banana-wars

During the Banana Wars of the early 20th century, the U.S. military toppled regimes and massacred thousands to keep U.S. business booming.

spent 33 years and four months in active military service,” an American veteran named Smedley Butler once wrote, “and during that period, I spent most of my time as a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers.”

And the one person who kept all of this at bay was voted out of office in November 2020.

The movement has already begun in the form of the Abrams accord and more recently the Negev summit.

There have been delegations to Turkey offering Erdogan economic salvation in return for Turkish anti Iranian and anti Russian action. That will include Syria and a dismissal of Russian and Iranian troops.

It will include a coalition effort to speedily develop trans Mediterranean pipelines to forever end the possibility of Russian oil blackmail on Europe

Although not acknowledged by the American MSM, the process is well under way

I was talking of the overall view on FR. To me that is so frustrating. This economy overall living is awful in the west right now. It’s seems more relevant that the state of the Russian economy. Pure diversion. Most people here probably couldn’t name 10 Russian cities or describe popular trends currently going on among Russian youths because no one really cares about what’s going on in Russia. You may be right, people are living it so don’t post about it but it seems crazy to me.

Yes, of course: The Western sanctions have been entirely without effect. In fact, Russia's economy is thriving!

Far too much importance attached to "airplanes not falling out of the sky" and "nuclear power plants not going up in smoke," I say!

Regards,
