I remember a family member in 1966, before commercial formula, making her own.
Hmmm, I was bottle-fed and born in 1954. I don’t ever remember being told I was given homemade formula, and just assumed in my adulthood that it had been commercial.. Maybe I’m wrong. But I don’t remember seeing my mom make formula for my younger brother, either... I know memories can be tricky, and all. I know formula was all the rage in those times in certain areas. Maybe the moms were mixing up batches so quickly that it was second nature to them (no pun intended, although breastfeeding was considered “quaint”, as I recall) and we just didn’t take notice. Pity there’s no one still around to ask.

I was born in 1954 also and had a terrible intolerance to milk of any kind. I don’t know what she said she fed me as a baby, but I was so malnourished that I had rickets and have scoliosis in my upper spine now from it.
All I remember her saying was that as soon as I could take any solid food the doctor had her feed me pork brains and scrambled eggs. Yuck! She said she nearly puked making that stuff.
It’s weird that the scoliosis hasn’t impacted my life. I guess since I had it so young, my body learned to work around it. My posture has always been good but that was drilled into me by my grandmother. If I’m extremely tired, one shoulder drops just a little, but I have never had upper back pain from it.

You might not be wrong. I really have no idea when they started making commercial baby formula. I thought since this family member did homemade in 1966 it was before commercial formula. Also, we were in a rural, out in the sticks area. Perhaps commercial formula wasn't readily available or too expensive? 🤷♀️

I have a copy of the formula given by the doctor for my husband’s birth - born 1947 - around here somewhere..
