A new study has linked body fat (adiposity) with risk of fatal prostate cancer.
It found that every 10cm (3.9 inches) on a man's waist increased his odds of dying from prostate cancer by 7 percent. The association didn't just apply to belly fat, however, with the rise in risk similar for overall body fatness.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 52,000 cases a year. It is also the second most common cause of cancer death in males in the UK.
All of the studies included in the meta-analysis were prospective, meaning men who were free of prostate cancer at the start of the study were followed for many years and the number of deaths from prostate cancer during that time logged.
Adiposity was measured at the start of each study, with up to four different measures used: body mass index (BMI, a measure of body fat based on weight and height, available for 19,633 men who subsequently died from prostate cancer), waist circumference (3,181 deaths), waist to hip ratio (1,639 deaths) and body fat percentage (670 deaths).
Higher amounts of body fat (adiposity) were linked to higher likelihood of fatal prostate cancer.
Every five-point increase in BMI was found to increase the risk of dying from prostate cancer by 10 percent, while a 5 percent increase in total body fat percentage raised the risk by 3 percent.
The risk was similarly increased for central adiposity. Each 0.05 increase in waist to hip ratio increased the risk of fatal prostate cancer by 6 percent. And every 10 cm (3.9 inch) increase in waist circumference increased the odds by 7 percent.

Obesity makes everything worse.
Eat mostly plants and animals, exercise, don’t drink or do drugs, meditate/pray, and get plenty of sleep.
“Eat mostly plants and animals,...”
Been doing that for years:)
I was associated with many men with prostate cancer during my medical career. I’d say that the majority of them did not meet the definition of obesity.
And, avoid fad diets, food supplements that aren’t found in nature and excess calories of anything.
If corpulent Americans worked to an easy 23% body fat then the resultant drop in carbon emissions would be equal to taking 130,000,000 cars off the road and dousing every light in Las Vegas.

both my bro in law and his son had prostate cancer, and they are scarecrows. My dad too come to think of it.
But still, lose the weight and take better care of yourselves!
“Eat mostly plants and animals...”
I get my plants through the animals I eat.
This was only prostate cancer that caused death—not the slower moving kind the majority gets, but you make a good point.
One is controllable.
But in America, we have:

We are a society that accepts, even affirms, behaviors which are destructive. Telling anyone "no" today is not allowed. It could hurt their feelings. Having ideals is bad (it makes kids not feel good about themselves): Barbie
Today, having standards or true ideals makes one a bad person. Everyone needs a gay friend, don't shun the fat chick (which thinks she's a princess) with an ass in the rear and front, and the worthless bum that can't get up from a couch and lives from his parents at 28 (but can tell you all about the various types of weed) shouldn't be called a “bum.”
We are already paying for the stupidity. But it will get worse.
Tell that to the gynosociety culture and you’ll find find out what a horrible person you are for saying its bad for wimmin to be fat tubs.
Everyone knows being overweight is bad. You can only tell that to some people without being attacked.
BMI isn’t a great measure of body fat. How about data on actual body fat percentage?
That is also provided, even in the title.
“every 5% body fat = 3%”

Thanks. Didn’t catch that. BMI is a personal beef of mine. I spend several hours a week in the gym so my BMI is high but my body fat percentage is lower than you would expect. In fact my dietician suggested an increase in body fat would be advisable.
My husband is slim and he had aggressive prostate cancer at 50. He’s lucky to be alive.
The more I read some of these health guidance reports the more I’m beginning to believe that eating is overrated.
My husband died at age 60 of prostate cancer and we were told by doctors that it’s the younger men who have the highest mortality rate. That most men will have prostate cancer if they live long enough, but the older you get you may die but you die of something else. Nobody ever said anything about weight, just that this cancer is more aggressive the younger you are. My husband was diagnosed at 54.
It is my recollection that most of the patients I dealt with who had aggressive prostate cancer were long and lean.
