The war in Ukraine has had its fair share of embarrassments for the Kremlin. From the sinking of the Slava class cruiser Moskva in April to the infamous 40-mile-long Russian military convoy holdup near Kyiv seen earlier in the conflict, Moscow has had little to cheer about in terms of projecting competent military strength. The latest hit comes via visual evidence that a Russian T-90M Proryv-3 (Breakthrough-3) — a modern and rare main battle tank — has been destroyed on the battlefield by Ukrainian forces.
Shared on Twitter by The Kyiv Independent’s defense reporter Illia Ponomarenko, the image, dated May 4, shows what appears to be the remnants of a T-90M tank, still smoldering after a direct hit somewhere within Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv Oblast. Andriy Tsaplienko is seen reporting in the foreground.

Gee! How far do you have to be from one of those things when it cooks off?
And nobody has seen a T-14 Armata tank because it’s vaporware.
CC
In addition to the T-14 being vaporware, their new advanced stealth fighter, the SU-57 was hailed as being superior to the F-22 Raptor, it’s been MIA this entire war.
Either the plane is nothing but a couple of prototypes or has so many issues, it’s not ready for primetime.
Wow
Was it destroyed on the battlefield by Ukrainian forces, or did it break down and the Russians burned it to prevent the Ukrainians from recovering it? I didn’t see any details in the article about how it was taken out.
"I didn’t see any details in the article about how it was taken out."
Why give up any secrets? ;0)
Does the cause of its demise matter?
Any unsupported piece of kit will be taken out.
Does it look like there is another tank in the background (upper left) that isn't burned out? What's up with that?
Putin may be acting like Stalin at home, but he’s looking like Mussolini in Ukraine.
The infamous predator tractor the Ukraine Army uses almost had its hooks into the Russian tank so the tank self destructed.
The difference is whether or not it is vulnerable to conventional anti-tank weapons.
We just sent the Ukrainians a bunch of M777 155mm howitzers. Whatever the tank’s got going for it, I doubt it’s artillery-proof.
I would think that a tank in modern warfare is outdated and a recipe for certain death. Locate with a drone, and pulverize it with artillery. I would think susceptible to IED type of munitions as well. Disable with IED, pulverize with artillery.
Rinse and repeat.
.
Tank not that advanced after all.
The T-14 and Su-57 are held in reserve, in case of a NATO attack. After all why use up your best equipment, when you can use assets with a shorter lifespan. Granted the troops wish they had better stuff, but using up the soon to be obsolete, preserves the tip of the spear.
Yeah. Being a Russian tank crew in Ukraine is not a way to live a long life.
Ukraine drones have been incredible.
but using up the soon to be obsolete, preserves the tip of the spear.
Meanwhile, we are using up our best equipment.
True, but the tank in the photo looks too intact to have been a victim of a 155mm artillery round.
