Lyft and Uber said this week they will fully cover legal fees for their respective drivers who are sued under Oklahoma’s anticipated restrictive abortion law.
The Oklahoma House on Thursday passed the Texas-style ban that prohibits most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, a time period before many women have even discovered they’re pregnant. The so-called Oklahoma Heartbeat Act now goes to Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, who is expected to sign it within days.
Like the Texas law, people aiding the procedure, including doctors, people paying for the procedure and clinic workers are at risk. That includes rideshare drivers who can be punished for transporting women to clinics to receive abortions, where they could be fined up to $10,000. Abortion rights activists and providers argue these laws effectively overturn protections set under Roe v. Wade in 1973.
“Women’s access to health care is under attack again, this time in Oklahoma,” Lyft CEO Logan Green said in a tweeted statement. “Lyft drivers are once again caught in the middle just for getting people where they need to go. We believe transportation shouldn’t be a barrier to accessing health care and it’s our duty to support both our rider and driver communities.”
Lyft and Uber first announced protections for drivers in Texas after its restrictive abortion law took effect in September. Now, the rideshare companies are extending that help to drivers in Oklahoma.
“Like in TX, we intend to cover all legal fees for any driver sued under this law while they’re driving,” an Uber spokesman told CNBC in an email.

So I wonder how many of these Uber/Lyft drivers would even know they are going for an abortion unless they are driving them directly to the clinic from across state lines? Think about it, if they are only taking them to the airport, bus terminal how would the driver know? Why would any woman gleefully say "I'm off to kill my baby" to an uber driver?
It’s been my impression that most radical or progressive Dems tend to think most folks will see the world as they do; biases, dellusions, distortions and all.
How one track minded can one get?
I’ll be sure never to use Lyft or Uber drivers for anything
Great!
For Lyft and Uber, that will get old fast. Couldn't happen to a nicer coupla companies.
If you believe that it belongs in the states and that the states should decide then the states will do what their constituents want them to do. That doesn’t mean they will be zero abortions. It is a State issue.
Many believe that. But if you take the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment, which in identical language, ban taking “life, liberty, or property without due process of law,” then I think you arguably have a prohibition on abortion.
Science and logic are demonstrating that from the moment of conception, you have a human life. If the child is alive adn of the human species, I don’t see how you can argue that it’s not a person.
And if it’s a person, then go back to the first paragraph. The Fifth and Fourteenth would apply.
“That includes rideshare drivers who can be punished for transporting women to clinics to receive abortions...”
Absolute BS. The person aiding the process of abortion is who is culpable, not a PAID rideshare driver who has no reasonable way of knowing what is about to go down.
This is pure, unadultered, cost-free virtue signaling
I never thought I'd say this, but I will seriously consider using a taxicab for the next rare trip out of town.
Call a cab. The rates are about the same if not less and the drivers are professionals.
We’ve got a company here called Yellow.
people aiding the procedure, including:
doctors - right
people paying for the procedure - Yes
clinic workers - Yes
This is a poison pill for the law...
Punish rideshare drivers for transporting women to clinics. Someone’s going to sue against this provision and get the entire bill repealed.
It will all be moot in a short time when Oklahoma outlaws abortion altogether when/if the Draft becomes the Opinion.
The state should confiscate the driver’s car. Let Lyft and Uber buy’em a new car.
The drivers would either have to be mind readers or a kind of police.
