What started as an attempt to keep the peace turned tragic as a man is now charged with murder after helping break up a fight on a bus.
Edward Hilbert, 55, intervened in a fight on a San Diego city bus on Saturday, restraining a 28-year-old man for several minutes after he had gotten into a fight with a woman. During this time, the younger man lost consciousness and went into medical distress, police told ABC 10 San Diego, and was unresponsive when law enforcement responded to the scene.
First responders attempted to perform CPR while the man was lying on the bus floor, but he did not wake up and was eventually taken to a nearby hospital by paramedics. The fight initially began at around 8 p.m. local time, and the 28-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital by 9:23 p.m.

So, what did he do that would consist of actions that resulted in the man’s death?
Another George Floyd? Guy flips out while on fentanyl, is restrained, then OD’s during the event.
that’s my guess.
That doesn’t sound far off - just go to the article linked.
A lot of people will make a judgement after reading this article based on the characterizations and adjectives the journalist chose.
But keep in mind they might be totally unrepresentative of what really happened. What’s the truth? Probably can’t tell from an article
I did. All it said was the younger man lost consciousness and went into medical distress
Is there a Mrs. Hilbert? Kids? If you get involved remember you are getting your family involved.
The moral of the story is don’t break up fights. If two or more people want to kill each other. Stay out of their way. The Police will be more than happy to bust your ass. The time to do a good has went the way of the Do Do bird. Never forget: No good deed goes unpunished. this man just learned that the hard way.
Could very well be.
Moral of the story, don’t fight in public, especially with
a woman.
Someone is likely to jump in even if she had been asking
for it for decades.
Not enough details to go by. It sounds like he tried to stop a man from beating up a woman.
What?
Are you implying that a Newsweek article, presented by MSN, may be biased?
Avoid them.
Is this a Black victim vs white vigilante story?
He had no idea who started the fight, the back story to the fight, who was the villain, who was the victim. But he had to protect m'Lady.
There is no reward for White Knighting.
if your choice is to restrain one or the other... restraining the man is the correct choice (assuming he’s not a manlet).
why? an adult male (6’0”+) can EASILY kill a typical adult female (5’5”+) if he tried. people seem to forget this.
as for the male losing consciousness while being restrained... i’m guessing the guy went for a choke hold and didn’t let up in time unless drugs were involved then all bets are off.
of course, i’d prefer a firehose for both to cool things down :)
The thing with that is sometimes the action involves a thug against an innocent.
Still, as you note, the eventual outcome follows the maxim, "no good deed goes unpunished."
The police and the local government DA are the enemy, folks. It is just as simple as that.
The one thing I get from this is that there very likely is more to this story. Like races involved, for one.
The defendant should be asking for his own impartial autopsy....just sayin....
I’ll be forever grateful to the men who pulled my now ex-husband off me when he was high on drugs.
The female victim could have been packing heat except she's in California where politicians and leftist voters insist that victims be unarmed.
