GHISLAINE MAXWELL LOSES BID TO OVERTURN SEX TRAFFICKING CONVICTION - BUT HAS MAXIMUM SENTENCE CUT BY 10 YEARS

Ghislaine Maxwell has lost a bid to overturn her sex trafficking conviction, paving the way for her to be sentenced to decades in prison.

Lawyers for the British socialite had asked a judge to reject the verdict on multiple grounds, including insufficient evidence.

Maxwell was convicted in December of recruiting teenage girls for US financier Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse from 1994 to 2004.

In a written ruling, New York District Judge Alison Nathan said the jury's guilty verdicts were "readily supported" by extensive witness testimony and documentary evidence at the trial.

However the judge said she will only sentence 60-year-old Maxwell on three of the five counts she was convicted on.

The judge said three of the charges effectively covered the same offence so upheld only one of those three guilty verdicts.

It reduces Maxwell's possible maximum sentence by 10 years to 55 years behind bars, according to Reuters.

Judge Nathan wrote: "This legal conclusion in no way calls into question the factual findings made by the jury.

"Rather, it underscores that the jury unanimously found - three times over -that the defendant is guilty of conspiring with Epstein to entice, transport, and traffic underage girls for sexual abuse."

Reduced from 65 to 55 years? That’ll really help her. 😀😊

She’d rather live quietly behind bars than to be found cold and stiff in her cell one morning.

Guilty though she clearly is, it is outrageous that she did not receive a new trial after a juror was revealed to have lied about not being abused himself and then used that experience to convince the other jurors to convict.

Of course, Judge Nathan had to rule this way because she was a facing a tough confirmation battle for her new appointment to the appeals court.

https://www.law.com/nationallawjournal/2022/03/23/senate-confirms-judge-alison-nathan-to-2nd-circuit/?slreturn=20220330074308

The U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Alison Nathan to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Wednesday. The Senate voted 49-47 to confirm Nathan, making her the second openly LGBTQ woman judge to sit on any federal appeals court. Before her appointment, Nathan served in the Southern District of New York, where she recently oversaw the sex trafficking trial of Ghislaine Maxwell.

With her unable to avoid spending the rest of her life in jail (which, is you consider Epstein’s death, might not be that long), there is no incentive for her to name names.

Ole Slick Willy and Prince Andrew are exhaling big sighs of relief . . .

Or she might name names to get some pay-back, especially if she accepts that she is going to be "Epsteined."

It’s an odd situation: they had all the evidence to successfully prosecute exactly ONE person out of dozens/hundreds involved. One can only imagine the horrors promised should she choose to implicate and testify against the others.

“Guilty though she clearly is, it is outrageous that she did not receive a new trial after a juror was revealed to have lied about not being abused himself”

I agree. The integrity of the process is much more important than achieving popular results.

“ She sex trafficked to whom?”

THIS in huge letters! Trafficking implies she was providing for a third party, but I don’t see no third parties being arrested for rape or sodomy with potentially underage and certainly unwilling girls and boys. So where is the crime? It’s sad what the justice system has become.
