Crying in remorse as I chomped’: Woke eaters are giving up octopus
NY Post ^ | 04/22/2022 | Beth Landman

On a rainy afternoon in April, Union Square Park was, as is often the case, home to a band of protesters. This time, the cause was not inequality or political oppression, it was a mollusk — an octopus to be precise. Protesters held signs reading “let’s stop this cruelty” and “#stopoctopusfarm” beneath images of the leggy creature.

Amidst rising demand for the tentacled delight, Spanish company Nueva Pescanova has announced that it will open the world’s first octopus farm in 2023. But the plan is mired in controversy with environmentalists, zoologists and animal lovers decrying that it would be a cruel practice. The creatures, who do poorly when confined, have been increasingly found to be intelligent and sentient.

“It’s a giant step backward with what we now know,’’ said Fleur Dawes, communications director for In Defense of Animals, the organization behind the Union Square rally. “Thousands of people have signed petitions trying to stop this farm, and we’ve received about 20,000 emails.”

Completing the life cycle of the octopus in captivity is difficult; they only did it for the first time around 15-20 years ago. With some species there is a fair amount of cannibalism. So if they eat each other, why can’t we eat them?

What do rich people want to do when they retire? Live by the ocean and fish. Octopus are already doing it.

The current champion in the Battle of Troublesome Pluralization is octopus, which, depending on which dictionary is consulted, may be written in three different ways: octopi, octopuses, and octopodes. Such a range of options might prompt even the most patient learner of the language to say “what the hell? C’mon, English, get your act together.” This state of affairs is not so much the fault of the English language as it is of the people who speak it, who have been debating the proper way to pluralize octopus for a very long time.

That was a prank (fake hate crime) designed by liberals to mock their ‘stawman’ view of conservatives. Their butt boys in the press went along with it.

I can put a table out with the statistics of how many people are hospitalized and even die from environmental dihydrogen monoxide and I will get thousands of signatures for its regulation!

You did not fight your way to the top of the food chain. We are fortunate enough to stand on the shoulders of giants. I too think octopii are delicious.

Maybe I’d feel some remorse if they weren’t short lived. But, they are.

Tough tentacles.

My favorite. Smoked taku poke from Fresh Catch, in Kaneohe, (By the Windward Mall) and a side of furikake fries. There is a reason I have lost 40lbs since I moved off island.

I guess I’ve had very badly cooked ones, because they’ve always been rubbery to me.

Somewhere, I read that it needs to be cooked very little, or a lot, to come out right.

They’re so smart they realized all that is BS long ago...

They're like the dolphins in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series: "Man has always assumed that he is more intelligent than dolphins because he has achieved so much--the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time."

I sure hope squids are stupid, or if they are “sentient” that they are Nazis. I really like calamari.

My only complaint is that some are cooked into rubberiness...

Octopus a the national dish of portugal.

I tried the boiled version. Stomach rumbled for the rest of the day.

Next time, grilled.
