Death row's oldest inmate has had his execution stopped at the last minute because of a mistake in the preparation of the lethal injection.
Oscar Smith, 72, was supposed to be killed on Thursday in Tennessee's first execution since the pandemic began and had even had his last meal of a double bacon cheeseburger and apple pie.
Yet Tennessee governor Bill Lee granted a temporary reprieve for Smith, who was convicted of the 1989 killings of his estranged wife and her two teenage sons, after what was called an 'oversight' in preparations for the lethal injection.
The Republican governor didn't elaborate on what exactly forced the surprise stop but Amy Harwell, an attorney with the federal public defender's office representing Smith, said the issue was a 'mishandling' of the drugs.
Lee said: 'Due to an oversight in preparation for lethal injection, the scheduled execution of Oscar Smith will not move forward.
'I am granting a temporary reprieve while we address Tennessee Department of Correction protocol.'
The inmate had been scheduled to receive a three-drug injection at a maximum security prison in Nashville.
Smith became death row's oldest inmate after Texas executed Carl Wayne Buntion, 78, on Thursday evening for the June 1990 fatal shooting of Houston police officer James Irby, 37, during a traffic stop.

What’s the prob? They still have other means. Rope,electricity, bullets etc.
Just keep feeding him double bacon cheeseburgers. He’ll be gone soon enough.

And now come the 27 appeals filed by his taxpayer funded lawyers demanding the death sentence be thrown out because of the horrible PTSD he suffered as a result of the “mishandled” drugs.
You know. I wonder the same thing. Hell when we put our CAT down a few years ago, it was really not a huge challenge for the vet. I don’t understand why this is so complex. We know how much heroin it takes to kill someone. Give him 5 times that amount, and voila! Or yes, fentanyl.
Well, since he’s already had his last meal, it’s just a matter of him starving to death now.
Ha! You expect the Govt to do anything in a simple fashion? Surely you jest. The idea of a massive hit of morphine is way too simple of an idea for these birds.

We should abolish the death penalty in the US, not because it’s wrong, but because it’s a total joke.
My personal preference would be the rope ... extremely effective if done right, a very eye-opening life lesson if done wrong. And the cost of the rope can be pro-rated over several uses making it extremely cost effective.
There are men on Death Row here in California that were sentenced back in the early 1980’s, and their appeals are still not exhausted. Going on 40 years with no end in sight. A travesty, but then again this is California. These men will die of old age before their date with justice.

Whites are being disproportionately executed, blacks, Hispanics and other are under represented.
I think we should demand that more blacks, hispanics, and others be executed to achieve racial equality.
