NEWS FROM WASHINGTON: Action of the Government Relative to Mr. Cameron’s Arrest; THE EX-SECRETARY OF WAR SUSTAINED (4/22/1862)

The President sent a message to the House to-day covering a copy of correspondence between the Secretary of State and BENJAMIN H. BREWSTER of Philadelphia, relative to the arrest in that city of SIMON CAMERON, late Secretary of War, at the suit of PIERCE BUTLER, for trespass, vi et armis, assault and battery, and false imprisonment. Secretary SEWARD addressed a letter to the counsel of Mr. CAMERON, announcing that the President justifies the act of Mr. CAMERON, as it was done by his authority and for the public defence. The message was laid on the Speaker's table, and had not been read or ordered to be printed at adjournment.

The Select Committee on Emancipation had a meeting to-night, to consider the various appeals made by the free colored people of the United States, and especially those just liberated in this District, that Congress will designate some Territory to which they can emigrate, and where they can enjoy the blessings of liberty in fact as well as name. The whole subject was talked over in a conversational way, but no final conclusion was arrived at.

The recent order of the Treasury Department forbidding the shipment of coal to foreign ports, and to home ports south of the Delaware, has been so far modified as to confine it to the ports north of Cape St. Rogue, South America, and west of that longitude.

On Saturday afternoon the President, accompanied by Secretaries CHASE and STANTON, Capt. DAAHLGREN and D.D. FIELD, of New-York, went down the Potomac in the revenue steamer Miami to Acquia Creek.
