Come join us Friday May 13, 2022 – Sunday May 15, 2022 for the Camp Aliceville WWII POW Camp Reenactment located at the Aliceville Museum in Aliceville, AL. Camp Aliceville was one of the largest POW camps in America from 1943-1945 housing over 6000 mostly Afrika Korps prisoners. To honor the history of Aliceville’s great contribution to the war and honor all of those who served…we will be putting on a period accurate reenactment of the WWII prison camp for those days.

We welcome reenactors to portray Rommel's Afrika Korps and Luftwaffe POW's as well as American MP's and Alabama State Troopers. In addition, we welcome any period correct vehicles such as military Jeeps and trucks. The town will partially reconstruct the fence, gate, and possibly guard towers.

POW's will arrive by train at Aliceville depot as actually happened and they will then march approximately 2 miles thru town to Camp Aliceville compound as spectators look on.

I thought some might be interested in this event. Camp Aliceville was one of the largest German POW camps in the country. They arrived by train, and my father was a teenager at that time. He remembers seeing them walk from the train station to the camp.

In addition, although small, Aliceville Museum has a great collection of POW memorabilia and other historical relics.

When I was stationed in Germany some of my buddies and I went skiing at Ochsenkopf near Bayreuth. An elderly German man came up to us and asked if we were Americans. He then asked us what states we were from. He had been a POW in Iowa after surrendering in Africa. He told us he was sent to live with a family on their farm and he worked for them and only had to check in once a week at the police station.

There were POWs that either stayed in Iowa after the war, or returned there after being repatriated.

Sounds fun! We’re in HSV since 2019. I’ll tell my family about it. My mother’s father was a WWII POW in Germany. There were German POWs at Ft Knox where we are from too. My wife is now a crazy Tide fan but she has not yet been to Tuscaloosa

so maybe?

Sounds good! There was a B&B in Aliceville but I don’t think it’s in existence any longer. Closest lodging would be Tuscaloosa :-)

Hope you all can make it!

Interesting history - thankful for our men who gave up so much to serve.

Wow. Only once a week.
I think these fellows worked but were under stricter rules.

They were vetted and only the low perceived threat guys were allowed to do this.

Oh, of course. That makes sense.

A few years back, some of the surviving POW’s came back to visit, and some of their relatives have been there to see where their fathers, grandfathers, etc., had been imprisoned.
