Jordan Hatmaker was skydiving in November when the worst thing that could happen happened: Her parachute didn’t open.
The plane was more than 13,000 feet above the ground when she jumped, and she hit the ground at about 80 miles per hour.
Hatmaker’s reserve parachute did actually deploy, but it made her main parachute pop out at the same time.
“They pulled away from each other in the air and then dragged me down in kind of a spiral motion,” she explained.
Once she realized she was going down, Hatmaker had one minute before she hit the ground.
Hatmaker believes that the way she fell saved her life, with her leg hitting the ground first.

of gravity.
Sounds like they gave her probation instead of a life sentence. Good for her!
Whoa, that woman could beat ya’ up.

“...a broken back, leg, and ankle...”
With both parachutes deployed, it is hard to believe she reached a normal terminal velocity of 125 mph.
Excessive sweater puppies...
A lifetime? Or what's left of a lifetime? Give me a minute to think about it.
“ I know what broke her fall.”
Also gave her a little extra buoyancy.
I’m going to laugh about that one all day!
Good one!
First case I’ve seen where the chute didn’t open and you can take it back.
Leaving a perfectly good airplane in flight doesn’t strike me as entertainment. But hey I used to drive motorcycles like an idiot when I was young….so whatever blows one’s skirt up.
Before Skydiving you should always check your air brakes.
Definitely, not guilty, then!
I would agree. I don’t think that she would have survived hitting the ground at terminal velocity.
Sergeant Airborne said, “The rest of your life!”
Hi.
I’m sketchy on the details because it was a while ago, and maybe some FReepers here can add more details.
The Golden Knights, I believe it was Ft. Hood, TX where the training was conducted, were practicing a jump. One of the soldiers couldn’t link up, and had to abort. He was about 3000’ when he experienced a streamer. Back up got caught in the streamer.
Don’t remember the estimated velocity he was traveling, but he went through a hanger window on the roof and his “chute” caught the hanger window.
He stopped three feet from the floor of the hanger.
He went back to duty six months later.

She hit the ground hard and thankfully survived. She did not hit the ground at 80mph. The human body will not survived the G forces at that speed.
I would imagine going from 80 to zero near instantaneous is not healthy...
I suspect the maths is all wrong but, jsut out of curiosity:
