You know it’s a strange world we live in when a controversial college professor known as a “space archeologist” gets in a Twitter spat with an actor best known for his role as a futuristic spaceship captain.
Welcome to 2022.
The issue between UAB professor Sarah Parcak arose when Shatner tweeted about his History Channel show “The UnXplained” and the episode “Mysterious Ancient Ruins.”
“Ancient ruins fascinate us. Some archaeological finds are so baffling that they challenge everything we know about the past. Will we ever learn the truth about these mysterious ruins? Or will they continue to present more questions than answers?” Shatner wrote.
The tweet prompted questioning responses from several archaeologists, including Parcak who invited Shatner to send her a direct message to “engage if you are interested in learning why the premise of the show is problematic.”
Parcak later added some additional tweets.
Shatner, who is known to be a vocal Twitter user, responded.
“For a “supposed” archaeologist (who didn’t get a gig on my show by your own admissions and the fact you are upset); you do not have any idea of etymology which is really puzzling. “Butt hurt” has its roots in punishment such as spanking a child not homosexuality dear,” Shatner wrote today.
It is unclear what Shatner is referring to in the “Butt hurt” comment but fellow academics were quick to defend Parcak.
“(Parcak) is not a “supposed” archaeologist any more than you are a supposed shill-for-hire. She has a Ph.D. from Yale and is a renowned Egyptologist,” one wrote.
The latest Twitter spat isn’t the first social media attention received by Parcak. Last year, the university condemned a Tweet from the professor in which she said conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh should have suffered until his last breath during his battle with cancer.
UAB: University of Alabama at Birmingham, a basketball college.
Oh. Like Hoagland?
I thought you had to actually dig in the ground and find artifacts of material culture to examine, to be an archaeologist.
As far as I know, only a handful of humans have done that on the Moon, and a few robots on Mars...
I remember seeing her on a documentary about using her computer program with satellite photos to find buried structures in the desert West of the Nile.
Seemed legit to me. I certainly won’t vouch for her politics.
Thank you for clarifying that. I thought it meant unadulterated anorexic bovines, unacceptable adult bifurcation, unusual apoplectic buffaloes, undulating authoritative bifocals, unacceptable affordable babushka, ultrasonic Amish barbarians, unreserved astrophysical basalts, or it could just be a school somewhere in Alabama. Who the hell knows?

Space Archaeologist
Same as a regular archaeologist, but they just look up and come up with their theoretical stories. They don’t need to look at “props” for their whoppers like regular ones do.
UAB?
If nothing else, William Shatner has an ability to tick off loons. He has entertained me and mine for decades, and now he does it outside of television and films too.
Shatner is a skilled self-promoter. He was plugging his new show on Twitter, then took the academic’s tweet to further raise his show’s profile.
“She has a Ph.D. from Yale”
If she is so bent outta shape by Rush, she needs to explain why she and Yale can’t/won’t fix New Haven.
Of course!
When in doubt, I like to go with the most creative possibility.
>>This is NOT Science. It is WOKE religious fanaticism
Impressive summary. Well done.
Denny Crane!😏
They suffer from DNL syndrome. They Did Not Look at all issues and factors in a particular subject. That is why some great archaeological finds were never found except by serendipity.
Give Shatner a break, lady. He’s 91 or so. Let him beef all he wants. Mind you, he shouldn’t he POTUS.
Shatner discreetly DM’s the “Nutty” Professor:
“Professor Parcak, I’ll raise your social profile, if you agree to raise mine as well. Both parties win! Deal?”
“Undulating authoritive Bifocals”?
Reminds me of stuff from a spam filter:
Hot Genius Ladies...in your area, just waiting to meet you!
(Your lab or their’s!)
Daniel Jackson.
I remember when the History Channel was actually about History.
