Michigan police have released footage of a black man being shot in the back of the head by a white cop during a struggle over a Taser following a traffic stop in Grand Rapids, sparking protests across the city with hundreds of people calling for justice.

Amid public outcry for transparency, police released the footage on Wednesday showing Patrick Lyoya, 26, face down on the ground as he is fatally shot outside a house in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 4.

The vides also depicts the events leading up to the shooting, including the traffic stop that led to a brief foot chase and struggle over the cop's Taser.

The white officer repeatedly ordered Lyoya to 'let go' of his Taser, at one point demanding: 'Drop the Taser!'

Citing a need for transparency, the city's new police chief, Eric Winstrom, released four videos, including critical footage of the shooting recorded by a passenger in Lyoya's car on that rainy morning.

'I view it as a tragedy. ... It was a progression of sadness for me,' said Winstrom, a former high-ranking Chicago police commander who became Grand Rapids chief in March. The city of about 200,000 people is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.

Video shows Lyoya running from the officer who stopped him for driving with a license plate that didn't belong to the vehicle. They struggled in front of several homes while Lyoya's passenger got out and watched.

Winstrom said the fight over the Taser lasted about 90 seconds. In the final moments, the officer was on top of Lyoya, kneeling on his back at times to subdue him.

In a traffic stop situation, it seems black people should’ve learned by now that they only have two options. Either behave peaceably (and accept the consequences of their illegal traffic action)...or resist/start a fight and get shot/choked out. Common sense would tell them to take Option #1. But no...they opt to die. Why? I just don’t understand that.

If I’m pulled over on the side of the road, with a cop car behind me, their blue lights a-flashing...yes, that’s the LAST PLACE I WANT TO BE. But, I refrain from dying by a accepting the ticket for my traffic infraction...and live to see another day.

Yeah...you got pulled over for a reason. It can be something you may not know about...brake light out...or something that you did...driving erratically, stolen license plate.... If you know you’re driving a car that’s stolen, maybe get out and run like hell. But fight the cops? That’s beyond stupid.

Cynical, depressing, and spot-on.

From the days in the UK when buses had a conductor as well as driver. The former sold tickets; monitored capacity. "Ding ding" was the signal from the conductor that it was OK to drive on. (Passenger door was at the rear.)

Too much information?

"Too much information?"

Not all all. Thanks, I love history, and trivia like that.

All this talk nowadays about where to put trannies in the prison system.

Yes, I remember years ago when a video of Richard Speck with a another man on video, talking a smoking a substance before doing, whatever....(they didn’t show that part)

He had breasts and looked like he was on some estrogen.

I have an AA CRJU and paralegal studies from UNO, but it never went, anywhere. I ended up in communications.

When I was 20, I went to put in an application for the police academy, and these two black, women smirked, and told me just to fill out a postcard.

I was a 117 dripping wet at the time, so, maybe they had a point.

Enjoyed your post, and thank-you.
