LOL! Yeah, I got fed up with the all-Tiger all-the-time coverage Thursday and Friday. Funny I did not hear him mentioned today at all (when you’re starting 18 shots back in the final round what is there to say?). Kudos to him for coming back, but the accident was entirely his fault. And his other problems were all self-inflicted too. He was never likeable nor did he ever show much personality. He is golf and only golf. His golf skills are beyond dispute or debate, but he is not the champion or man that Palmer or Nicklaus was.
With the endorsement potential coming his way this will be a good chance to lock-in about 40 to 80 million in income over the next five to ten years easy.
McIlroy’s and Morikawa’s back-to-back
That was amazing.
He’s going to get the EA PGA tour game named after him next year.
Scottie Scheffler got to know his current caddie during the PGA Tour players Bible study group. His caddie worked for Bubba Watson for many years though they had an amicable parting a few months ago. He was with the mercurial Bubba Watson for his two green jackets and he certainly knows the golf course at Augusta. Congratulations to Scheffler.
Makes me wish I’d put more emphasis on golf back in the day.
Your comparison of Tiger to Arnie and Jack as men reminds me of a story I read recently about Mickey Mantle. A reporter jointly interviewed Mickey and Stan Musial. After Stan left, Mickey told the reporter, “I could have been a better player than Stan—I had more power and speed. The reason Stan was a better player was because he was a better man than I was.”
From what I have read, Mantle was convinced he would die young. All the men in his family did - father, uncles, grandfather. Of course they were miners not ballplayers. Nevertheless he lived it up burning the candle at both ends. Reportedly he was very shaken up by Roger Maris' death when Maris was only in his early fifties, as Maris was a comparatively clean-living family man. Didn't stop Mickey from partying though.
One of Nicklaus’ US Open wins coincided with one of his children’s birthdays. The child wanted to have McDonald’s as his birthday dinner. So the Nicklaus family celebrated winning the US Open dining at McDonald’s.
The best story I heard about the contrast with Maris' character was a story told by a teammate. He was building himself a house during the offseason, so Roger packed a lunch every day and showed up, unpaid, to help.
I figure if he keeps his head straight this victory will be worth 50 million over time.
