Your comparison of Tiger to Arnie and Jack as men reminds me of a story I read recently about Mickey Mantle. A reporter jointly interviewed Mickey and Stan Musial. After Stan left, Mickey told the reporter, “I could have been a better player than Stan—I had more power and speed. The reason Stan was a better player was because he was a better man than I was.”
From what I have read, Mantle was convinced he would die young. All the men in his family did - father, uncles, grandfather. Of course they were miners not ballplayers. Nevertheless he lived it up burning the candle at both ends. Reportedly he was very shaken up by Roger Maris' death when Maris was only in his early fifties, as Maris was a comparatively clean-living family man. Didn't stop Mickey from partying though.
One of Nicklaus’ US Open wins coincided with one of his children’s birthdays. The child wanted to have McDonald’s as his birthday dinner. So the Nicklaus family celebrated winning the US Open dining at McDonald’s.
