Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins died early Saturday morning after he was struck by a dump truck while he was walking on a South Florida highway. Haskins was 24 years old.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda said Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene.
"He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic," Miranda said in an emailed statement.
She didn't say why Haskins was on the highway near Fort Lauderdale at the time. The accident caused the highway to be shut down for several hours, and Miranda said it's "an open traffic homicide investigation."

There are signs, saying pedestrians are not allowed on interstates.
Well, in the above link, the ESPN reporter, automatically and basically said the dump truck driver is guilty.
That’s nuts! 595 5here is a fat, wide, dragstrip. 80mph, 30 feet between cars.
A dump truck! Bad way to go. But quick.
.
The obvious concern is Suicide by Truck.
One early report was written in an odd way.
I would NEVER try to cross an Interstate highway. Especially someone who is well to do, should just call up his insurance company to get road service.
People don’t always realize how fast vehicles can move. They can be a mile away, but seemingly just in front of you in seconds.
Homicide investigation?? Why?
But...if there is onboard documentation or other indication that the driver was speeding, they will probably stick it to him even though the fault seems to lie with the bad judgment of the deceased.
When a nobody in a dump truck smashes an important person, well...someone has to pay.
It was Covid, right?
I mean it’s not 1985, Haskins most definately had a phone, he could have called up some car service.
Even if the dump truck guy was speeding, pedestrians are not allowed on interstate highways, Haskins broke the law by crossing the interstate highway.
Sounds like a drug reaction of some type.
Yes, he certainly should have called for help...anything but challenge the traffic.
One has to think alcohol or drugs may have been involved.
important person?.....I’ve never heard of him.....but God bless him, and his family....
Ever driven down a street and had a black guy or gal simply step off the curb right in front of you, causing you to stomp the brakes? How about walking in the middle of the road, trying to take up as much room as possible? I have a feeling something similar may have happened here, and the driver couldn’t stop in time.
This is either the beauty of FR or the craziness of it.
Stuff happens. He got stuck and tried to cross the highway. A 24 year old athlete thinks they’re indestructible. Nobody expects to die.
Maybe he was drunk or high we’ll find out.
But we have people here talking about suicide, drugs, police favoring celebrities, everyone knows not to cross that highway etc.
Stuff happens.
case in point....the 340pound "kid" who fell from the carnival ride.....if he knew what he weighed and yet got on the ride anyway, he's partly to blame....
With Biden’s gas prices $20 doesn’t get you as far as it used to.
Yes, I saw a report earlier in the day that suggested suicide. I can’t find it now. It could be wrong.
Curiouser and curiouser. The farther down the rabbit hole we go the stranger things get. Damn! I mean just damn!
Homicide isn’t necessarily intentional or illegal.
he was killed around exit 10A on I-595, westbound side.
I drove that area a lot for a few years. That intersection where I-75 (alligator alley) joins w/ 595 and 95 is particularly exciting as everyone coming off alligator alley has been doing 90+ mph for the previous hour+.
why he was not in his car is the big question. that’s one area you wouldn’t want to leave your vehicle.
then again... getting hit by a dump truck doing 70+ seems like the best solution if you wanted to make a ‘quick exit’
