NEW YORK (AP) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is planning trips to Iowa and New Hampshire. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., is considering a rough timeline for a potential presidential announcement. And allies of Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., are openly talking up her White House prospects.
More than two years before the next presidential election, a shadow primary is already beginning to take shape among at least three fierce Republican critics of former President Donald Trump to determine who is best positioned to occupy the anti-Trump lane in 2024.
Their apparent willingness to run — even if Trump does, as is widely expected — represents a shift from previous years when “Never Trump” operatives failed to recruit any GOP officeholders to challenge the incumbent president. But with the 2024 contest almost in view, the question is no longer whether one of Trump’s prominent Republican critics will run, but how many will mount a campaign and how soon they will announce.
Those close to Cheney, Hogan and Kinzinger expect one of them, if not more, to launch a presidential bid after the 2022 midterms. While all three are nationally known to some degree, their goal would not necessarily be to win the presidency. Above all, they want to hinder Trump’s return to the White House

Oh, that’s funny. I needed a good laugh!
Hogan will not even win his home state of Maryland ... why would we nominate this buffoonic never-Trumper?
Thanks for warning us AP!
We know you always have our best interests in mind.
They’re like viruses. In fact, they ARE viruses. Treat them accordingly.
These people are stupid. Or delusional. Or both.
Being “anti Trump” doesn’t get you too far aholes. Unless of course you’re a deep state, treasonist, election stealing SOB
I gave money to the Trump campaign in ‘20.
I also gave money to MI senate candidate John James.
Those are the only donations I made.
Yet somehow I got an email the other day from Liz Cheney.
I’m disgusted by this, and I will tell any campaign that solicits money from me that I won’t donate if they sell my information to other campaigns.
Screw them.
They are all DOA with no support!
It’s a pretty good gig - you raise a bunch of money, travel around the country and meet loads of important people with whom you can audition for corporate board seats. If you’re careful with the funds raised, you could have millions left over in a slush fund you can use for personal travel, after crashing out, that you can dress up as politically-related by showing up at some campaign event or other.
Of course, if you had real career prospects outside of politics, you’d spend the time getting back on track instead of wasting your time on this stuff. But Kinzinger, Hogan and Cheney basically have no future outside of politics. So they’re engaging in this charade. And politics is pretty unpredictable, so this is like buying a lotto ticket with a couple of years of your life. Hey - you never know.
Since they don’t have an expectations of winning, the only reason they will take the debate stage is to insult and lie about Trump in front of a national audience - without holding back.
No chance!
Trump may not be the first choice of all Republicans, but he is a choice of many!
Whoever gets the nomination must be at least acceptable to the Trump fans!
I suggest we go to their events and get into their faces in a big way. Abuse and ridicule. Protest their assistant democrat asses. DO NOT be nice. The time for writing polite letters is over.
Cheney, Hogan and Kinzinger
The 3 stooges. What a joke AP is. These 3 could not get 5% between them
Hey, how about Joe Walsh? He ran such a robust campaign last time.
These people are so far from the republic base they think they are popular.
I want to see Kinzinger cry
