The steamship Oriental, Capt. Tuzo, from Port Royal, S.C., 28th March, at 7 P.M., arrived at this port yesterday afternoon.
On March 30, at 10 A.M., off Halleras, she passed the steamers Ericsson and Marion, steering S.W. On the same day, at 9 P.M., SAMUEL B. ELLIOTT, of New-Portland, Me., aged 16, died of consumption. He was a member of the Eighth Maine Volunteers.
From Port Royal to Lookout had fine weather, and from thence had continued and fresh breezes from north and east The ship Wm. Cummings was going into Port Royal as the Oriental came out, on the outward trip.
When off Charleston the officers of the Oriental observed that the city was lighted up in a most peculiar manner. Bright lights were observed in different portions of the city, and were so vivid that at one time it was thought they were caused by burning buildings. At this time a vessel was observed, which soon fired a blank shot at the Oriental, Captain Tuze immediately made signals, and ordered lights to be burned to indicate the character of his vessel.
No attention was paid to the signals, and a shot was fired which whistled through the rigging of the Oriental, and the armed vessel bore down upon her, firing as she came. Lights were still kept burning; still no notice was taken of them, and the strange ship came nearer and nearer. It was at this time about 9 o'clock P.M. The orders given on board the armed vessel were distinctly heard by those on board the Oriental. Finally an order to run Capt. Tuze's vessel down was heard.
By this time the engines of the Oriental had been stopped, and she lay waiting the attack. Another order to fire was heard given on board the
