Alex Crawford travels to the town of Irpin, north of Kyiv, where Ukraine says it has driven out Russian forces.
The town has seen some of the heaviest fighting in recent weeks as Russian troops attempted to edge their way to Kyiv.
However, Moscow said this week it was “cutting back” its operations in the north of the country.

Cutting back= retreat.
I don’t remember Russia ever claiming control over the town. The forces are moving southeast, to finish the Donbas group of the Ukrainian army.
They’re pulling back to crush AZOV.
The Ukrainian army isn’t a big deal compared to clearing off east Ukraine.
Sigh! Your comments have actually become humorous, if it weren’t for the horrors of war.
The Russians had Irpin. There were even videos of refugees escaping over the blown bridges at Irpin, and the Russians advanced past those obstacles and spent a lot of time putting pontoon bridges over the river. At one point the Russians were well past Irpin, all the way to the Kiev zoo.
But the Ukes are way, way past Irpin, to the major crossroads at Ivankiv, as of yesterday. The Russians seem to have retreated past that.
True.
? I thought the point (at one time) was to destroy the Ukrainian army. Then the story was that the Russians would bombard Kiev until they quit (the Russians have pulled back out of normal artillery range of Kiev). And now they are headed to the Donets.
The stories change constantly.
Well, the real problem has been the attacks on Russians in Donetsk. The AZOV battalion has been doing this constantly. Central and West Ukraine isn’t a concern because most of there is Ukrainian. You notice Mariupol (which is the principle point of resistance for AZOV) is getting crushed right now.
But you’re right; we’re not going to know the point of this war until it’s over.
Nobody claimed Irpin even if the troops passed it. Ukraine subjected the area to horrific bombardment from Kiev. It makes no sense to stay there as the place is a kill zone. The original Kiev pincer was to tie the Kiev garrison and the movement of the Ukrainian forces from the West. It allowed the Crimean and DNR forces to take hold of southeast. And take some 90,000 best Ukrainian forces into pincer in Donbas. Now the Kievan group is moving to help them finish the pincer.
Sure, that was the plan all along. That's why they flew in troops to grab the local airport. Dividing the Russian attack in four columns was stupid.

Day 38 of my 3 day war. My army advances backwards after a glorious defeat in Kiev & I am reminded of when I said I could conquer the city in 2 weeks.
I remain a master strategist
The usual point of holding a place like Irpin is to deny it to the enemy. Its a good crossing point for the Irpin river. Its on the highway to Kiev. Its a crossroads for highways headed to every strategic direction. It can be used to turn the Irpin river line. Its two-three km from the airport at Hostomel (around which there has been very heavy fighting). The Russians had to hold it or open themselves to all kinds of trouble.
Anyway, irrelevant now. The Russians are retreating and the Ukrainians have followed far beyond the Irpin river line.
This explains all the smoldering wrecks, piles of dead Russian bodies, and abandoned vehicles they've left behind as people are now filming these areas where Russia had its forces.
The Azov battalion is 1000 men or less. That is a strategic goal for a military operation with a frontage longer than Operation Barbarossa?
That is exceptionally unconventional strategic thinking. It must be a work of genius of course.
Polish propaganda.
Who said it is a three day war? I didn’t hear it. It is not shock and awe by all objective accounts. If you want a three day war and shock and awe look what happens if Poland stupidly enters the war.
Polish propaganda? Do the Poles have propaganda?
I thought the Poles were the good guys for resisting the EU mind control assholes. Or has the good guy/bad guy script flipped?
“If you want a three day war and shock and awe look what happens if Poland enters the war.”
Yes that would be a fun day. It would be great to watch the Polish F-16s wipe out the Russian airforce’s 40 year old rust buckets in a few hours.
Who is that fat head Russian media personality who said that Russia would "lift its brow" and Kyiv would fall "in 3 days"? Maybe State Security should get a handle on that guy for spreading disinformation to the Russian people about how this "special operation" was going to play out.
It is not shock and awe by all objective accounts.
Who are you kidding? We are ALL shocked at how much Russians suck at war. You're only good at killing the helpless!
