The Ohio 9th District Court of Appeals has just issued a decision in the Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College case.
For those of you new to the case, Gibson’s Bakery was a 5th generation family business in Oberlin, Ohio, near the Oberlin College campus. It served baked goods to the public and also to the student dining service, as well as operating a general convenience store. As with many other small businesses, student shoplifting was epidemic, as we covered, Student journalist: Shoplifting at Gibson’s Bakery was part of Oberlin College’s “Culture of Theft”
A store clerk, a member of the Gibson family, caught an Oberlin black student shoplifting, a scuffle ensued that was joined by two other Oberlin black students. When the police arrived, they arrested the students who eventually plead guilty. But before that, the college officials and students accused the bakery of racial profiling, called a boycott, suspended Gibson’s business with the college, and organized protests outside the bakery.
At the protests, a flyer was handed out, according to witnesses who testified at trial, by Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo, who also handed out stacks of flyers for others to distribute. The flyers accused the Gibsons of a long history of racial profiling, including in the incident with these shoplifters. The Gibson’s disputed that allegation and that they did anything wrong in this indicent, and requested a public apology from the college in order to repair the reputational damage, but the college refused. (To this day it never has apologized.)
Based on the actions of college officials in conveying and promoting the defamatory accusations, a lawsuit was filed, resulting in massive verdicts for the owners of the bakery, David Gibson and his father, Allyn Gibson.

NICE!
HAHA..
6 years !
Gad.
It depends on any restrictions or conditions attached by the donor at the time of the bequest or gift. I read an article somewhere (and damn, need to find it!) that there is a trend in larger bequests or gifts of more restrictive conditions being attached.
It’s also possible that the college’s insurance might be asked to pay, but again, going on memory, I thought I read the insurance company said the claim was not covered. Now I gots to look!
She is no longer with Oberlin, and is now vice president for student affairs at Olglethrope College in Georgia.
There is a picture of her at the link.
Their reward was in Heaven
If you mean Gibson’s Bakery, surely your post is sarcasm
The problem for Oberlin is that a the vast majority of that endowment is - gifts that can only be used for purposes specified by the donor. Damages have o be paid out of the unrestricted portion of the endowment, so that will sting a bit more.
Interesting—your explanation makes sense. Thank you!
From the comments..
Apparently Raimondo is now at Olglethrope College in Georgia:
figures..
“her” is up for debate
Our country was founded for one type of people (makers) - unfortunately, we now have two types (makers and takers).
Oberlin should have its academic accreditation revoked.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Shame on you, its one of the few Marxist indoctrination places places that Americans can get a Ph.D. in basket weaving......( grin.)
In this day and age, you complete the Ph.D. with the added certification of ‘Underwater’ Basket Weaving. :)
I asm especially hopeful that they claim the whole damages. However, I will not be surprised if Gibson, in the interests of the overall community, reduces the overall amount enough to allow the local college to survive. I hope that they see some reform to the leftist institution prior to reducing that amount.
The college, as we see from the facts in the case, did not want to let the five generation bakery store that was also an overall community asset survive. That is why I think any sort of reduction short of reform of the college would be of harm to the community.
To be near, I see no reason in justice or law to reduce the damages. I am just imagining that the Gibsons may put community first as true good people often do.
Best news all day.
Nope. She’s moved on to Oglethorpe

Wow, I remember this well. Just wish I knew where the six years went...LOL.
Beauty is skin deep - but ugly goes all the way to the bone.
Wondering if any of the INDIVIDUALS responsible will suffer any consequences.
Does the payout - any part of it - come from the wrongdoers, or does it come from the taxpayers?
I’d wage the latter.
No wonder liberals are so emboldened.
Sick, and unfair.
