What is the best dog to adopt?
3/31/22 | dallasbiff

Thinking of adopting another rescue, still grieving over the loss of my rescue of 12 years, she died in 1/21.

She was a 45 lb. bundle of joy(hound, lab, pit mix) never barked.

I still miss her, but maybe it's time to renew.

The dog that responds best to you while at the shelter is usually the best choice. Then again, often the shy one in the back is the one who needs you the most.

It’s up to you. Every dog is a good dog, some just need more love than others.

We had a doberman (wonderful dogs as well), then brought home a greyhound. Those two girls were best buds, inseparable! I’d be happy with either breed. Greyhounds are great big sweeties, while the dobes have a very high opinion of themselves, but are hugely fun and loving.

Get a cat that identifies as a dog. It’ll poop in a box and you won’t have to pick it up.

The youngest you can find. That way you can still mold it into your dog instead of trying to fix someone else’s dog with an unknown history.

Just put down, Mollie, our half pit bull mix. Such a good dog. We got her when she was about four but knew her owner had kids and that he made sure the dog was good with them. He wasn’t some meth head psycho raising a psycho dog. He had divorced and the wife had the kids so he lived alone and Mollie was his living companion. He lived in a historical downtown area of a small city and he had a three foot fence that she stayed in.

We got lucky.

I also had a Great Pyrenees LGD that was four and I had to put him down within a year because he was aggressive towards humans including me. Being aggressive towards humans is not even supposed to be their nature but he had been abused. I could tell because one time I walked by with a 2 inch x 5 foot tree limb in my hand and he went and hid behind something. That told me someone beat him with a stick or similar item.

He got replaced by a couple of Great Pyrenees/Anatolian mix puppies that were weeks old so I’m able to raise them as my own.

I also wouldn’t mind getting another pit mix for up by the house. The LGD puppies are for the goats’ protection. Thought I had a nice full Pit puppy but it didn’t pan out. Didn’t have that humongous head or intense stare.

I prefer mixed breeds because the health issues associated with purebreds are lessened as are the behavioral issues. Mixed Pit is less apt to be a killer but still has that scary teeth baring snarl which people, umm, appreciate.

There are no bad dogs. Only bad owners.

I have had several breeds that have thrived because we treat them like a part of our family, but train them well as puppies as to what is acceptable of them. Once they know their boundries it all goes well.

My next dog will be a Chihuahua. Going to name him Cujo.

look for around 30 lbs worth of dog; over 40 lbs theres a higher chance of hip dysplasia. Also, smaller dogs live longer.

That’s funny. We used to have a cat that would play fetch.

Pits can be great. It is owner dependent PLUS rigorous training

And make sure it is a puppy and a young one at that.….

Make damn sure you have NO DOUBTS about being a dog owner.….

🙄

From the OPs post….

….Thinking of adopting another rescue, still grieving over the loss of my rescue of 12 years, she died in 1/21.…

He obviously knows about dog care and rescues.

Best of luck on finding that special new family member.

We adopted a rescue, last year.

A middle aged, 11 pound poodle mix.

So smart, highly trained, never barks..unless door bell rings or my oven timer is going off, and, I’m in the laundry room 😂

No shedding, is a fringe benefit.

I had a teacup chihuahua that would not train for me. I tried for the better part of 8 YEARS, and he just would not stop some of his bad behaviours. I gave him to my GF, and he responded to her nearly instantly, and is a very well-behaved little gentleman. He needed a small pack to blend in with, and when I lost my other dog the chi went stupid-er.

“ALL were pit bulls with helpful descriptions: “requires strong owner”, “not good with people”, “does not like children”, “not good with other dogs”, etc.”

Geez, that’s kind of scary.

We found a Maltese mix. Or he found us. Small, very loyal, and loves roaming the farm. Hates the cat. They’re always in compitition for what food is left behind. Doesn’t bother the chickens or the farm animals. Just a great all around dog. He is high maintenance because of his non shedding hair but a small price to pay for his love.

I had a stray Belgian Shepard adopt me once. It was the best dog one could ever want.

I got mauled by a chow chow...what’s your point? the majority, by far, of pitbulls, are great dogs.

My granddaughter had 2. One was just a puppy and she got up every few hours to feed her. They were love bags. She lost one and was heart sick. The young teen who had been with the dog since a baby was broken hearted. They searched for days to find them when they got out of the fenced in yard. My daughter has a mix something. The 2 dogs saved her life a few years ago. The neighbors heard them barking and called the police because it was very unusual. When the police entered, the husband was dead and she had fallen out of her wheelchair and been on the floor for days. A very sad situation.
