What is the best dog to adopt?
3/31/22 | dallasbiff

Posted on 03/31/2022 1:04:37 PM PDT by DallasBiff

Thinking of adopting another rescue, still grieving over the loss of my rescue of 12 years, she died in 1/21.

She was a 45 lb. bundle of joy(hound, lab, pit mix) never barked.

I still miss her, but maybe it's time to renew.

After having small dog's most of my life, when I moved to New Mexico last year and the passing of our Chihuahua. I decided it was time for a larger breed. Looked into American breeds and found a Catahoula Leopard /Boxer Mix. He is big and goofy and can go for days. Wore me out so I got him a playmate a female Black Mouth Cur. ZZ is the best and smartest dog I have ever had. They both are very even tempered and loving. Both were rescues but other than some chewing issues which went away as they grew, they are the joy of my life.

My looong experience with rescues:

1. The dog picks YOU. He/she will recognize you, and let you know. It’s true. Try it. Once you see it happen —that instant bond—you’ll rely on it in the future. Magic.

2. Always have 2 dogs minimum. Two is not much more work than one, and they’ll be buddies for when you’re gone. Dogs are pack animals. They hate being alone for any lenght of time. If you can’t have 2, get a cat. That works, too.

3. By having 2, it’s much easier when that awful time comes. You share your misery. It really helps.

4. Go now. Go asap. Look at all the dogs, in all local shelters. Go every day, until The Right One let’s you know. Then commit, immediately.

Good luck!!

I have had 5 greyhounds since 1993. Cheeta, Susie-Q, Maggie Mae, Kika, and now Georgia. I can not imagine living without a greyhound.

Now that I am 74 I really appreciate that they sleep up to 18 hours a day.

I know, they do pick you. My first dog was eight weeks old from a litter of german shephard puppies. He came up to us with tail wagging, and was basically saying, "I want to be in your lives"

My dad paid the $25 and we brought him home. We didn't know what to call him, and I stated why don't we call him after a comic Peanuts character, and one brother said, why not Schultz, after the creator of Peanuts.

Well anyway, Schultzie became part of the family, and while my mother was house training him, and had newspapers all over the house, I was enjoying reading the comics from the newspaper on the floor, and Schultzie came over and peed directly on my favorite comic "Nancy and Sluggo".

To you youngins out there, comics were part of something called a newspaper.

Well to close, after the dog died, I said "nevermore", but I got a few more in my life.

Thank you Basket for your reply

I have a red heeler now, he is the smartest and best dog anyone has ever known. I can take him to others houses, and he won’t bark or get territorial with other animals. I can leave him home in the back yard and he doesn’t leave all day, with no fences. I taught him to herd the rooster at night, because the rooster runs the hens. He can jump like a gazelle, run like a world class marathoner, but he never bites. What people call nips, are closed mouth nudges. They hurt, because the breeds jaw and head are hard as a rock. I can allow the grandchildren to go loose on the soccer fields, he keeps them close. If they start running, he cuts them off or runs them down and “guides them”. Try getting in the car with him if he doesn’t know you. If you are on his property at night, he will take a stick and chase after you shaking his stick, and sounding like 10 dogs fighting.

BEST DOG EVER.

Plott Hounds.

They are obscenely healthy and free of genetic issues.

If I was not stuck on Dobermans, that would be my next dog when this evil cancer finally takes my baby boy.

/prayers for him appreciated. we need a miracle.

When my beloved Seven dropped dead in November, I looked on petfinder and saw this girl and I knew she was going to be mine.

Three months, no one took her because she black/bully/kennel aggressive

We connected like the Alien Facehugger.

I named her "Boo" after Boo Radley, whose only words were "Will you take me home?"

Of the 10 Doberman attack fatalities, 9 were committed in defense of their owners.
That is pretty damn awesome, IMO.

My girl dropped dead in November and in January, my boy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

We are beggaring ourselves to get him the best treatment available and keep him here as long as possible.

Anyone who would have a heart to donate to his bills, please see my profile page.

You know the breed so you know how I’m feeling right now.

They have been my heart, my soul and my reason for living, ever since my first one, a stray, stopped my pedo uncle from ever touching me again.

I owe the breed a debt I can never repay.

I have had them for so many years [1975] that I don’t even know how to be me without one but now I am facing that gutpunching prospect much sooner than I ever imagined.

He’s not even 5 yet and this is NOT right or fair.

:’(

Your Dobe is stunning, btw.

Go to your local shelter take all the dogs for a walk. And see which one chooses you. That’s the right one.

This thread breaks my heart even more than it already is.

Running low on money, many more chemo and other treatments ahead of us.

I won’t survive losing him.

I cry for everyone who has lost a dog and now I’m crying for DallasBiff, too.

Dogs should never die.

Thank you so much, Biff.

I pray your heart is healed some by saving a new furry angel who needs you desperately, like my little Boo needed me.
