I like both Chris Rock and Will Smith. Each is two standard deviations above the industry average talent. CR made a horrible judgment. Smith should not have smacked him but it was a purely human reaction and it was a slap not a punch.
The entire Oscars schtick involves insulting and humiliating individual members of the audience one after another. It’s wretched. If there is any good that comes out of this going forward, it just may be to tone down some of these non-funny, non-clever personal attacks on audience members.
I see no possibility that this was staged.

Neither do I. I look at this like Chris Rock’s “Andy Kaufman” moment. Sometimes these guys go a little too far.
He had a long standing feud with Rock and this was probably icing on the cake. A lot of emotion there, You could see Rock trying to collect himself afterwards. I think Will hit a cord for those tired of seeing jokes made on someone else’s misery.
