[MIT is reinstating its] SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles
MIT Admissions ^ | March 28, 2022 | Stu Schmill

After careful consideration, we have decided to reinstate our SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles. Our research shows standardized tests help us better assess the academic preparedness of all applicants, and also help us identify socioeconomically disadvantaged students who lack access to advanced coursework or other enrichment opportunities that would otherwise demonstrate their readiness for MIT. We believe a requirement is more equitable and transparent than a test-optional policy. In the post below — and in a separate conversation with MIT News today — I explain more01 about how we think this decision helps us advance our mission.

Good for them. College admissions should be about more than skin color and political correctness.

LOL Someone found out quickly that being in the top5% of an inner city school is like being in the bottom 90% of a private school.

I just read the other day where so other “college”, I forget the name, were dropping the ACT/SAT so they could add more “diversity” to their campus.

Well to paraphrase the late, great Johnnie Cochran...

If they bring the dough, their application will go.

Of course standardized tests should be part of the process. But still, no college or university will actually reveal their secret sauce for their admission process.

SAT/ACT is also a good way to measure the future student success rate. They don’t need these clowns that only show up long enough to buy the sweatshirt and T-shirt who are never seen again after the first “spring break.”

“Our research shows standardized tests help us better assess the academic preparedness of all applicants, and also help us identify socioeconomically disadvantaged students who lack access to advanced coursework or other enrichment opportunities”

So once they identify the “disadvantaged students” who flunk the tests, what are they going to do with them?

The SAT/ACT tests predict success in college. Other than that, they’re not good for much. /s
Oh and BTW, has anyone other than Charles Murray looked at the dropout rates for affirmative action admissions?

The California State system dropped testing last week, following the same action by the University of California system.

While I didn’t like the SAT/ACT at the time, with 20/20 hindsight, they are a decent measure of how someone has been applying themselves and taking study seriously. Are they perfect? No. But they are a decent measure of the likelyhood of a students success.

Natural selection?

I'm very happy to hear this news. Both of my kids scored 33s on their tests and we are still very worried they will be passed on by administrators in favor of kids who scored much lower, but have other “qualifying qualities” about them my two are too privileged to have.
