JFTR, I-81 goes from Wellesley Island in NY (at the Canadian border) to Dandridge TN. Strangely enough, both ends of that road are in those states’ Jefferson Counties.

I realize it goes that far north and essentially ends at the border, and have been on that strip many times.

However, there is precious little traffic going north of Syracuse, so the death toll up there isn’t nearly what it is south of Syracuse. Plus, the road is far more wide open than south of Syracuse. It’s a gorgeous drive. In the summer and fall.

The section between Syracuse and Cortland was particularly bad for fatal accidents and absolutely insane drivers.

I didn’t realize that the southern end of I-81 was also in a Jefferson County as well. Interesting.

I was hoping you meant it that way, but wasn’t sure. There’s plenty of people here on FR that believe in climate change.

Funny, that is what I call the CVS pharmacy down the road from me. Manilla.

My husband and I were just a few hours behind this horrific crash on I-81 on Monday. We were making one of our runs between northern Connecticut and Bluffton, SC, where we will be moving to permanently in a few months. We were heading north to CT.

I kept seeing "red" traffic problems via Google Maps ahead on 81 in the Frackville, PA area - on both sides of the highway. We couldn't figure out what was happening, as this stoppage of traffic went on for a long time. Finally I got a Fox News alert on my phone, detailing this deadly crash.

Hubby and I had to take a couple of detours on other highways / roads to avoid this accident site (both sides of 81 were closed down at this point). At times we ended up (at elevation) in two similar snow squalls, with near-zero visibility. Surrounded by 18 wheeler trucks, etc.

When the squalls hit us, I told my husband to get off the road ASAP. We did, and took breaks until the squalls passed through. Overly cautious? I don't care... We both came home alive.

Nerve-wracking ride back to CT on Monday, until the weather finally cleared up. I kept fearing another squall would hit us - they seemed to come out of nowhere. Thank God we arrived home safe. Prayers to everyone involved in this horrific crash on Monday...

Video captured terrifying moments as huge I-81 crash happened in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania

Once you complete the move to SC, you’ll never have deal with snow again. Think of that.

When I lived in Ct, I came to detest snow. It made my life my life miserable.

Glad you got home safe.

You still might need to deal with an occasional ice storm.

Sorry to hear of your problems with I81.

Chances are excellent you’ll find snow squalls to be extremely rare once you complete your move to Bluffton :-)

Thanks, FRiends. I've already gotten to the point where I also detest snow and ice. I've had a lifetime of it, and looking forward to moving to a snow-free part of the country.

Snow might look nice on a Christmas card, but overall it does make life more miserable (and dangerous at times).

The thing about snow squalls... if they happened while I was at home or work (here in Connecticut), or on a country road that wasn't congested, I would laugh at them. "No big deal!"

This was a completely different experience -- these squalls in PA last Monday roared in out of nowhere, and instantly killed all visibility in the middle of broad 'daylight'. Not fun when you're on a relatively unfamiliar major highway, surrounded by 18-wheeler trucks and cars. :-(

I am very grateful we arrived safely back in CT last Monday night.
