Can Russia Salvage Its Special Military Operation Disaster In Ukraine?

On day 32 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian forces are focusing their efforts on eastern Ukraine in an attempt to salvage anything they can from the thus far failed “special military operation.”

Last week, the Russian Ministry of Defense did an embarrassing about-face and stated that its primary objectives in Ukraine were focused on eastern Ukraine, where there are Russian separatists, rather than trying to capture large Ukrainian urban centers, such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa.

In its daily estimate of the war, the British Ministry of Defense assessed that the Russian military is repositioning its forces in an attempt to encircle and destroy the Ukrainian forces that are facing Donbas and Luhansk.

"The Russian military is still relying on stand-off munitions, such as ballistic and cruise missiles, to suppress, degrade, and destroy the Ukrainian anti-aircraft umbrella. Thus far, the Russian military has launched more than 1,250 ballistic and cruise missiles in Ukraine. However, more than a month into the war, the Ukrainian Air Force is still flying sorties, while the Russian Aerospace Force has failed to achieve air dominance."

The number one reason Russia went into Ukraine was to stop Ukraine’s annexation into NATO. According to Zelenskyy, that goal has been accomplished. The Russians are now in a position to negotiate a satisfactory outcome on the other issues that were the catalysts for the incursion. Where’s the Russian disaster? Take a look around America if you’d like to see a self inflicted “Ukrainian disaster”.

Afghanistan II

I believe the stinger missile and the other variants has a lot to do with why Russia doesn’t control the skies. You can’t outrun a Mach 3 missile in a helicopter and Su25. The hand held missile systems are an equivalent to the introduction to the longbow in mid evil times. During that period, heavy Calvary was the capital offensive weapon. Armor, broadswords, and spears were the weapons to be feared. It took years to become a knight and lots of money, and support pages.

The longbow erased that in an instant. Same analogy here. Multimillion dollar helicopters, jet aircraft, tanks, and armored vehicles destroyed by infantry with a $40k missile. Putin has another Afghanistan on his hands, only in spades and on his western border that he alone is responsible.

He will never be able to fully pull out. The flip side of the coin is his economy will be in ruins by sanctions. Aeroflot will eventually be grounded by no spare parts. He will be forced to ground more aircraft for spare parts. Aeroflot will soon to be called aeroflop.

The Russian idea of “negotiation” is to bind the adversary hand and foot in a chair, with a blindfold on, and a single light bulb overhead, and a semi-automatic pistol pressed to the subject’s temple, and then a gentle request, “Now we negotiate”.

All for a favorable and equitable outcome, you understand.

Not the same. I’m asking you to tell Vlad to man up for his monumental screwup. Personal responsibility.

The effectiveness of manpads is particularly low nowadays due to the modern electronic countermeasures.

> Where’s the Russian disaster? <

If Russia ends up “winning” this war, it will be a Pyrrhic victory. Russia - and Putin - are now outcasts. Sure, Ukraine has put NATO membership aside. But that’s just for now. You can bet it will still be on their minds.

The invasion has even got folks in traditionally neutral Sweden and Finland thinking about joining NATO.

As an aside, Putin was right about being concerned about NATO expansion. But when he started killing people and breaking things he lost any moral high ground he once had.

This isn’t kindergarten where you get to say “Yes but Johnny did it too...”. Tell Vlad the clocks ticking, his fellow countrymen are not going to wait all day for him to take personal responsibility.

Was Zelenskyy bound to a Russian chair when he stated NATO was off the table. I just love all the media stooges infesting FR these days.

Did you shoot Bush yet? I think Ze still have 3-4 weeks to capitulate and maintain at least some of the country. The longer it drags the less the chance. And the harsher the economic fallout for Western countries.

Whatever Ze says is irrelevant. He first said he is not going to seek NATO ties on February 24. He said it to the Russian to halt their offensive and to organize attacks. At the same time he asked NATO for express entry.
The guy has a canned narrative for each audience, and they are completely opposite to each other.

King Pyrrhic is the happiest ghost floating around today because he’ll finally get out of popular culture as people will now use the term “Putin victory”.

"Putin has another Afghanistan on his hands, only in spades "

As long as the West continues to supply Ukraine he will, which leads to your other comment:

"He will never be able to fully pull out. The flip side of the coin is his economy will be in ruins by sanctions. Aeroflot will eventually be grounded by no spare parts. He will be forced to ground more aircraft for spare parts. Aeroflot will soon to be called aeroflop."

I would have added that the economic realities will lead to social upheaval. In reality he's in a war with three fronts.

Can he survive? We'll see....
