Suggest a very reliable and durable can opener? (vanity)

Posted on 03/27/2022 9:35:57 PM PDT by Mount Athos

Friend put away my can opener where I didn't expect it. Made me realize I need a backup. Must be hand operated not electric

Best one I’ve seen is from Pampered Chef.

“SWING-A-WAY”

YEA AND AMEN. Got tired of buying can opener after can operner. Buy a SWING-A-WAY and end that. Have had current one for 10 years.

I use an old set my mom gave me from the early 60s because none of the new ones I’ve owned work properly.

Has to be a Swing-a-way. $15 new, and unfortunately chinese-made, but they appear to be the same quality as the u.s. made ones from 10 or more years ago. Cheaper can openers just simply Fall Apart oh, and that has the potential to ruin the meal unless you are ready to open a can with a hammer and screwdriver.

I have 1 working and 1 unopened in the drawer and 4 that I have thrown out in the last couple of years. Most don’t work more than a year or do. I totally understand the question.

A good solid knife works as well.

Interesting. How do you plug it in?

That’s been my experience also. That’s why I keep a couple of P-51s around until I get something else.

Check out flea markets and eBay; still good vintage US-made stuff out there.

This works well for very large cans:

* Get two can openers every time you get a can opener.

* Buy long handled can-openers that have an ‘Easy-Crank handle’. That way you get portability AND the ability to deal with thick tins (or if you have reduced hand strength).

* Ignore those who tell you that can-opener questions are not appropriate for FR.

(I should add: “Easy-Crank handle” seems to be the same as “Swing-A-Way”)

They also make a little larger version called a P-51. Better for old hands and fingers...

Seems like overkill to open a can...

In before the P-38.

A P-38? Kind of overkill for a can opener, but ok.
