Changing mask protocols could be hard for some kids to understand.
"It's natural for children to feel some anxiety," said Jennifer Louie, clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute, a nonprofit specializing in kids' mental health.
Louie recommends parents transition kids slowly by asking them lots of questions about how they feel, and says it's important to validate whatever the child says.
"Like, 'Oh, yeah, that makes sense, that you're nervous. I'm a little nervous, too. We've been doing it this way for so long,'" said Louie. "'Oh, the grown-ups have thought about this. It makes sense.'"
She says kids need a thorough explanation of why the situation is safer now. Parents can talk about how case rates have dropped substantially and vaccines are widely available. These are details that help kids understand the bigger picture.
The playground could become contentious as some kids ditch masks and others keep them on. Louie suggests getting ahead of impending peer pressure by explaining that risk is different for each family.
"For example, 'We can only control what we do. And so this is what we're doing,'" said Louie. "And, you know, we can talk about it. Our plan is a flexible plan. We can always change it based on, you know, how we're feeling."
If younger children experience teasing Louie recommends parents tell their kids to enlist a grown-up to help. For older kids the best tactic is to ignore or distract a bully because teasing only works if an oppressor gets a rise. You can help your kid come up with a few things they can say to prevent a bully from getting what they want.
She says it's also probably wise to warn kids they might have to put their masks back on if another variant emerges and cases surge.

“It’s natural for children to feel some anxiety”
Total lie
Two weeks to slow the spread….
I feel sorry for some kids with their (frightened) moms in stores here in Texas. Everyone around them is unmasked, back to normal, and there they are with the stupid masks, undoubtedly because mom said to do so.
It is natural for a muzzled and chained dog to feel disorientation when freed.
For the first week or so after the mask mandate is removed, I’ll walk into a store and feel like I’m missing something. Can you imagine how children that spent a significant portion of their life wearing a mask must feel to walk around maskless? It takes a while to get over it.
... struggle with the transition... I’m almost tempted to make a helluva proposition. For every kid that doesn’t want to remove that friggin mask, I’ll pay you a $100... For every kid that does want to remove it, you pay me $50. Let’s see who’s richer at the end...

It's even worse if you consider that these kids, if they've been vaxxed, were told "don't fear the needle...after this you can go back to normal." Now they're being told "no more masks."
When the fall and the virus returns and the hysterics return as well, these kids will grow up to become libertarians.

I dunno about y’all but I’m totally down with wearing a mask everywhere I go until forced to remove it.
They meant "teachers" - kids are just fine with it, but the educator caste never trusted those little infected brats nor their dirty Republican parents, anyway. :)
Zero reason for a child to wear a mask ever. I still see mothers keeping their children masked at the supermarket. It takes a lot of self-restraint on my part to keep from calling them out and getting myself viral on a YouTube vide.
It’s always focused on the scaredy-cats.
Oh, of course, unmasked kids are going to torture the safe, wise masked kids. That NEVER happened to the unmasked (ask my son), because they’re so caring.
And all this equivocal talk. And always “how you’re FEELING”.
In normal society, masks are the mark of criminals. As fully embraced by the BLM Antifa malcontent miscreants.
“Louie recommends parents transition kids slowly”
Video a couple of weeks ago teacher announcing to class last day for masks.
Kids screamed with joy.
It’s like someone with a sprained ankle who the doctor put on crutches, then, when he got better, could not let go of the crutches because he would miss the crutches.
I saw a masked mother with a probably 3 yr old masjed child in her cart...As I walked by I said “you’re gonna kill that kid”
Only difference is the crutches had a function other than virtue signaling and propitiating the Gods.
The chance of death is a considerable child development item to be covered, much more than the chance of the super slim minority with hetero Arousal disorders.
That illness, that war, that conflict, that acts of high speed transport, that lack of exercise, that lack of medical research, that lack of medical rigor, that lack of joy are killers of humans should be a teaching moment that parents and teachers must consider.
At least for the foreseeable future, Everyone dies and that the joys of life are interactions with other humans much more of a civil society resource for individual gain than acquisition of wealth or youtube followers.
A entire series of children need time to interact, a set of teens need to know how to fail in face to face relationships and why coupling isnt just swiping left or right. There is a group of 18-25 year olds who have not crashed and burned in an attempted hook or had a chance to meet that friend of friend who was the right fit for their heart.
We all need to get out a fear box and be limited only by the physics and time of a life. Risk taking is more than free solo and jet packs, it is about going out with friends and meeting their friends. It is about having a shitty relationship so the next one feels so much better.
Life is about personal daily failures and successes more than participation trophies, follower counts and championships.
