I suspect part of the issue may be — “Do you love me? Or do you love my money?”
If he’s not spending the money on her, but simply giving himself to her — is she happy? Or does she feel that she ain’t gettin’ what she really wanted?

I knew a guy who, for the first date would tell her it was casual and would take her to a burger joint. They had really good burgers but it was not at all in line with what some women expected on a first date from a guy with money.
Said it helped him weed out the gold diggers.
