Improving prognosis in chronic kidney disease (Common, cheap aldosterone suppressors reduced the need for dialysis or transplant by 26%)
Medical Xpress / Osaka University / Hypertension ^ | Mar. 23, 2022 | Tatsufumi Oka et al

Just as a water filtration system acts to filter contaminants from the water you drink, your kidneys act to filter waste and excess fluid from your blood. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney function is impaired over time, and the resultant build-up of excess fluid and waste has harmful repercussions on overall body function.

Researchers have demonstrated an association between the use of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), a class of medicines that acts by suppressing the action of the steroid hormone aldosterone, and an improved renal prognosis in individuals with CKD.

As CKD progresses, the initiation of renal replacement therapy (RRT), which includes dialysis and kidney transplantation, may be necessary for life support in kidney failure. MRAs, which include spironolactone, eplerenone, and potassium canrenoate, are commonly used to reduce swelling, blood pressure, and urine protein levels in people with CKD. However, the association between MRA treatment and the initiation of RRT has not been fully explored in a real-world population, which spurred the research team to undertake a large-scale retrospective study of MRA use in people with CKD.

"Our analysis showed that MRA use was associated with a 28% lower rate of RRT initiation and a 24% lower rate of the combined outcomes of RRT initiation and death," says senior author Jun-Ya Kaimori.

The research team observed a reduced risk for RRT initiation across various subgroups of people with CKD, including those with and without diabetes and those with severely impaired renal function. These findings highlight the association of MRA use and improved renal outcomes in a real-world population of CKD patients with varying health backgrounds. Overall, this study supports the use of MRAs in treatment plans for various groups of people with CKD who are not undergoing dialysis.

There are not a lot of interventions to minimize or reverse kidney issues, so this should provide some hope.

There is another study I came across that reversed GFR loss, and I may separately post that.

The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List

This potentially high volume ping list is for health articles and studies which describe something you or your doctor, when informed, may be able to implement for your benefit.

Now keeping a new list (“Common Issues”) for conditions expected to only concern at least 1% of the population. Ask to be on either the “Common Issues” or “Everything” list.

Please email or private message me if you want on or off of a list and of which list you desire.

Thanks for posting these, CM! May I please be added to your PING list? Thanks very much - and my lame kidneys thank you, too. 😜

mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist is a diuretic. What’s sad is my kidney doctor if it’s not recommended by the FDA will not approve anything. Because I’m finding out that the legal department runs his office.. I have been using natural diuretics for the last month.

Please note the diuretic used is a specific functioning form.

There are many diuretic classes, and this specific one is what was found to help, through its method of action.

BS. I gained 20% filtration increase by cutting out all the bad, changing my diet and supplementing with plant-based nutrition. Your body can repair itself, you just have to stop relying on the modern medical model, and start researching.

The info is out there. It’s not in a MD’s office.

Thanks for posting this. I lost my kidney function at age 69 and spent three years on dialysis. I know a little about this topic.

I came off of dialysis with a GFR of about 12 in October of 2016. I did this without a transplant after making several lifestyle changes over a period of a little over a year. All of these changes were in consultation with my nephrologist — but it all came about from my own research. While I respect most doctors, they work from a cookbook and if you don’t fit the model they get you as close as they can — but not outside the cookie cutter.

While I don’t believe my plan will work for everyone I believe it will work for many.

The kidneys are a complex body organ and, for the most part, they can not regenerate new kidney tissue (like some organs). I am extremely careful about what goes into my body because what goes in has to come out and much of that through the kidneys.

Please go down through this thread to posts starting at #10, which talks to a few things with the eGFR and improving it:

https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4037020/posts?page=10#10

There is a small study I will post a different day that describes a further way to improve GFR.

I've posted seven studies today and that is probably more than people on the ping list expected.

Could you FReepMail me the list of changes you made?

I’m also in stage 4 CKD.

Thank-you.
