Sounds like allergy season in N. California, which often begins about the 1st of March and lasts until the first hard freeze in late Nov/early December.

Chest pain from a moderate cold?

I've had (pretty mild) chest pain from a secondary infection following a bad cold, and prolonged chest congestion from secondary infections a number of times, but unless you have some other problem going on, chest pain is NOT a symptom of a "moderate cold". In any case, significant chest pain is a message to get to a doctor promptly, if you haven't already.
