British cellphones triggered deadly strike on Ukrainian base

30 Russian cruise missiles pulverised the Yavoriv facility, near the Polish border, on March 13.

The target on the base is believed to have been the International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security, where Ukraine has been training foreign civilian recruits for its international brigade.

Now, the Telegraph has learned that around 12 to 14 phone numbers starting with +44 were visible to surveillance equipment in the area in the hours before the missile strike.

Security sources said mercenaries paid by the Wagner Group, a secretive military company with links to the Kremlin, were suspected of operating on the ground at the time.

Mobile phone numbers can become visible to snooping technology when the device pings a nearby phone mast to connect to the network so a user can make calls or send texts.

Russia is thought to have access to a vast trove of phone numbers linked to elite British units, compiled through secretive surveillance operations near military bases in the UK.

Many of the British men who have volunteered to join the resistance against Vladimir Putin’s invasion formerly served with these units, meaning their numbers would immediately set off alarm bells in the Kremlin if spotted connecting to a Ukrainian phone network.

—————
The constant war cheerleaders repeating calls for war need to be reminded Russia has technology and has outpaced the west in many weapons. Super sonic cruise muzzles, super sonic torpedoes, no known defense.
Looking at all the Russian third rate T72’s getting blasted reinforces Russian war tactics….they are most definitely not employing their best in Ukraine. Their best equipment sits within their borders. Eastern and southern Ukraine are turning into a pile rubble, the Ukies are begging for arms, ammo, manpower, no fly zones, and aircraft…..don’t underestimate Vlad.

Good points.

My problem (and the Constitutional Republic's) is I have underestimated the US Government.

Many folks around here are falling for western propaganda about Russian military capabilities.

At the end of the day nothing can shoot down their missiles—all the rest is irrelevant.

Do they really need phone signals to know to hit a military base?

It probably gave them an exact location where to hit.

Military bases here in the US tend to be big sprawling affairs, you can’t target the whole thing with less than a nuke. I would assume that might be the case in foreign countries.

Even when I was at one of those monster bases, I kept my electronic footprint as small as possible. And left for the front ASAP.

You would have thought there would be some basic opsec.

Then again, I’ve heard reports NSA has picked up unencrypted info from regular Russian soldiers who - against orders - brought their personal mobile phones with them and decided to place some calls…..

Your mobile phone will get you killed on a battlefield. Leave it at home.

I’ve always said cell phones will kill ya. We lose at least one a week locally on the highways——just gotta look down to answer that phone——in front of a Peterbuilt.
