The country, no doubt, awaits impatiently for the details of the great battle which took place near Newbern, N.C., on the 14th instant, and which have, probably before this, been reported through the rebel telegraph -- though, it is hoped, with more correctness than their former account of the capture of Roanoke.
North Carolina is lost to the rebel cause. The City of Newborn, with its approaches by railroad and rivers -- with all its defences, consisting of miles of well-constructed batteries along the Neuse River, and powerful earthworks back of it, extending five miles below the town -- were captured by the Burnside army on the 14th instant, with the combined aid of the navy under Commodore ROWAN. The contest was a fierce one, and lasted for about four hours, but the defeat of the rebels was complete and overwhelming, and must go far to decide the question of Disunionism in the Old North State.
The victory, however, was dearly purchased -- the loss to our side being about one hundred killed, and some four hundred wounded. Lieut.-Col. HENRY MERRITT, of the Twenty-third Massachusetts; Capt. LAWLER, of the Twenty-seventh Massachusetts; Lieut. F.A. STEARNS, Adjutant of the Twenty-first Massachusetts; Lieut. WM. G. WALKER, of the Ninth New-Jersey; Lieut. ALLEN and Rev. O.N. BENTON, of the Fifty-first New-York; Capt. CHAS. TILLINGHAST, of the Fourth Rhode Island; Lieut. H.R. PIERCE, of the Fifth Rhode Island, and Capt. EDWARD B. LEE, of the Eleventh Connecticut, are among the officers killed, and some others are mortally wounded. Among the latter are supposed to be Major CHARLES LE GENDRE, of the Fifty-first New-York, and Capt. JOHNSON, of the same regiment.

Been to New Bern a few times, by car and sailboat. Pretty place. Not much the rebs could have done against the Union army/navy forces there.
Great area for sailing and anchoring out.
Several years ago my wife saw an article about New Bern in some periodical and thought it might be a nice place to retire to.
