Excessive napping could be a sign of dementia, study finds

Elderly adults who napped at least once a day or more than an hour a day were 40% more likely to develop Alzheimer's than those who did not nap daily or napped less than an hour a day, according to the study published Thursday in Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.

The results echo the findings of a previous study by Leng that found napping two hours a day raised the risk of cognitive impairment compared with napping less than 30 minutes a day. The new study used data gathered over 14 years by the Rush Memory and Aging Project, which followed over 1,400 people between the ages of 74 and 88 (with an average age of 81).

Sleep quality and quantity does decline with age, often due to pain or complications from chronic conditions such as more frequent bathroom breaks. Thus, elderly people do tend to take naps more often than they did when they were younger.

But daytime napping can also be a signal of brain changes that are "independent of nighttime sleep," Leng said. She referenced prior research that suggests the development of tau tangles, a hallmark sign of Alzheimer's, may be affecting wake-promoting neurons in key areas of the brain, thus disrupting sleep.

I was somewhat concerned when I read this article, but since reading all the comments, I am convinced I’m OK. Well, as OK as my fellow freepers!

As the song says:

Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There’s no cure, there’s no answer
Everything gives you cancer

Don’t touch that dial
Don’t try to smile
Just take this pill
It’s in your file

Don’t work hard
Don’t play hard
Don’t plan for the graveyard
Remember

Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There’s no cure, there’s no answer
Everything gives you cancer

Don’t work by night
Don’t sleep by day
You’ll feel all right
But you will pay
No caffeine
No protein
No booze or
Nicotine
Remember

Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There’s no cure, there’s no answer
Everything gives you cancer

No caffeine
No protein
No booze or
Nicotine
Remember

Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There’s no cure, there’s no answer
Everything gives you cancer

My Mother In Law never napped and went into Alzheimer’s and dementia. Then she started to nap.

We could not believe how fast she lost it memory wise.

She passed her written and actual driving test, and a couple of weeks later, she was full blown Alzheimer’s. She basically didn’t recognize family members, friends and fellow church people.

My wife flew back to spend some time/a week, with her towards her mother’s end, and basically all her mother did was nap and sleep. She didn’t recognize my wife.

At the end of the week’s visit, As my wife kissed her goodbye, her mother woke up and was clear minded for close to an hour. So my wife has that pleasant memory and a good goodbye.

Her Mother died in her sleep a few weeks later.

“#2 brownsfan - If you are a Cleveland Browns fan then you have dementia : )”

Old nickname. Now with a incompetent crook couple owning the team, and their habit of bringing in criminal abusers, not much to root for.

Winston Churchill came to mind to me as well. He would also lie in bed all morning, reading newspapers and going through dispatches. Then again, he kept insane hours. Almost Trumpian in his overall lack of sleep.

You get old enough and everything could be a sign of dementia.
